Asked Dr. Gragg why we don’t celebrate the 1931 championship. He said he’d look into it (said it’s the first he’s heard of it).

Daily did the research: "Eighteen schools said that they claimed the Helms title, with only one school — Notre Dame — saying that it views the Helms title as a lower-level title. Of those 18 schools, 10 of them have having banners in their arenas signifying the titles, with seven not having banners and one not clarifying."

Louie, is it correct to assume that FloridAlum is no longer with us? I used to attend most of his "Purple Parties" and I loved them! I'm sure he will be sorely missed, and I'm glad that WR has honored him by giving his name to the "main" message board on WR.
Yes, unfortunately Jerry passed the week prior to the Dublin game. He would have enjoyed the heck out of this basketball run. He and Smithee are toasting the Cats victory tonight I’m sure.
Thanks, Coral. I'm so sorry to hear the news, even though I suspected that's what had happened. I truly loved Jerry's "Purple Parties" and I hope there's a way to pick them up in the future. They were the BEST 'Cats parties I've ever been to -- Jerry sure had a knack for doing these events the RIGHT way!!!!

I hope something comes out of your conversation. Given Northwestern is the only possible claimant of the 1931 title (and other historians acknowledge that team as the de facto National Champion that year), it's long been a missed opportunity that we haven't properly raised a banner or celebrated that team in a more public fashion.
Given the 100 year anniversary of that team is coming up in 7 years, it'd be an even larger missed opportunity to not properly have a banner up in time for that.
For example, Kansas which has 2 Helms National Championship banners next to their modern titles did this to honor one team:

Louie is right. It was a great event. I have to give props to the Alumni Associaton and Athletic Department. Maybe more props to the latter. It was a no charge event. Food provided, you just had to pay for drinks if you wanted.
Having been the president of the Bay Area alumni club from 99-09 it was great to see. Lot of familiar faces but the comment was said by others many times yesterday afternoon….we (northwestern) travels. Chicago flights to Sacramento were definitely more crowded than normal.
I didn’t stay for the UCLA game but during our game I scanned the crowd and did not see many blue and yellow colors. And there weren’t a ton of empty seats.
For our game, the crowd was easily 80/20 purple to blue and Orange Boise State.
I flew in from Denver, my daughter joined from DC, I’ve never done anything like flying someplace for a day and thank gd for ff miles…but I said to her when the game ended, “we need to do this more often.”

Guessing this is Jerry’s daughter. Welcome back to our little purple corner of the internet. Maybe you can attend a future purple party as the MBB has hopefully arrived!
