There was some chatter about this on another thread a while ago, but in light of the ongoing passing game catastrophe bleeding into recruiting, I thought it deserved its own thread.
Every single QB on our current depth chart ran better than they passed this year (unless you count passes to the opponent). Our receivers dropped a ridiculous amount of passes. Our OL (except at RT) was overall solid and showed improvement under Coach A. ESD produced no qb/wr and a trove on big OL. No qb last year, and at wr Dennis and GHP are big boys who based on tape alone can block. it’s as if we’ve been recruiting to run the option for years.
Our RB depth chart is deep with varied skill sets. Our OL loves to run block. All our wr’s do is block anyway. I saw piss poor blocking last season from the SB position, but that can be taught. Look ahead a couple years and maybe last season’s web performance and today’s flips aren’t so bad if we run the option. It’s easier to find skill position players suited to run the option than it is to find then for a pro-style system late in the recruiting calendar. Plus, our current younger qb personnel already got the mold. Marty is a pounder. Whittaker is already being floated as a SB and used as Wildcat guy.
If Coach Jake really means he’ll adapt his system to the playmakers he has, we should be looking like a service academy on O next year. Year in year out, we recruit smaller and slower than the rest of the B1G (except Rutger). Army/Navy adapt their schemes accordingly are managed to be competitive against Mich, ND, and OU the past few years. We may be small too, but we still have B1G talent. Coach Jake, our talent in an option scheme; it puts us in the best position to win, and it completely fits Fitz’s philosophy of run first, ball control, clock management. Thank you for coming to my TED talk (manifesto).
