I'm anxious for some football, and most anxious to see who is behind center.

Honestly, nothing would surprise me at this point. I kind of half expect to see two (or more quarterbacks) on the field for the first snap of the season.

I don't see what advantage we gain by announcing the starting QB. It would be nice for the guy who will eventually be named the starter to be "the guy" leading up to the game, and we're all curious; however, I don't see why we would need to announce it to Stanford.

Makes sense. But I really doubt Stanford game plans for NU's QB, whoever he is. They know the offense NU runs under McCall and unless he dramatically changes it they will be prepared. And they have good success against Oregon in the past so it is hard to see them worrying about the NU offense whoever is at QB.

I agree with this. My feeling is we'll all wake up Saturday morning not knowing, and then at like 10:50 BTN will say something like "and let's go out to Evanston" and they'll show a QB warming up (and it'll be a low-angle shot, because they love that shot when a QB is warming up) and announce that he's the starter.

we don't have to wait. No doubt it's Oliver- After all, it is well known that Coach F is loyal to a fault and O is both a Senior and has actually completed a bunch of passes in an actual game albeit to receivers in the other color jerseys.

Fitz recently said something about making sure that the QB is a legit running threat this year. If that's true, then Oliver will not be the starter.

In any event, there will be basically no game film on the QB (unless it is Oliver and even then it is pretty limited)

Depends on whether we win the toss and elect to defer. :)
Fitz always defers. I always think you should take the ball. Nothing like getting the lead from the start. Remember the 2012 PSU game? TOP 20:43. Our first sustained drive started with 9:43 in the second qtr. Before that we ran 12 offensive players and 4 punts and got a total of 16 yards. We scored at the end of the 1st half to take the lead, and got the ball to start the 2nd. Toward the end of the 3rd quarter, we stopped them on a 4 play drive and Venric had the run back on the punt... which was great but the defense had to get back on the field. After that PSU had an 18 play drive, NU went 3 and out, and PSU had a 15 play drive. Then defense literally had nothing left.

That's a game I think we would've been more likely to win if we took the ball to start the game. Of course, I'm really smart in hindsight.

You defer when you trust your D. Actually 95 is the first time I saw anyone defer on a regular basis. A lot of teams have gone to it since.

The advantage is the increased reps the starters get together. If you split rep's right up to the last minute you put your guys at the disadvantage . If someone starts pulling away with reps in the next few days and sees an increase it will leak out publicly. Plus does every single guy want to answer questions about who the starting QB is? Make the decision and announce it. Stanford doesn't care who it is.

I think the assumption is that you can have a starter and give that person the lion's share of the reps but not "announce" it publicly. I don't imagine anyone is proposing that we continue to split reps evenly if someone emerges as the clear leader. Is it possible to keep a secret? I would think maybe, but who knows?

I would think that Stanford does care, at least a little bit? Maybe they're not heavily game planning based on the QB, but if they definitely know it was a thrower or a runner, that might affect prep a bit.

I doubt we know the starter for a few games. I think Fitz will keep mixing it up.

I hope you are wrong about the loyalty part but I get where you are coming from.

Unless he get' injured, Thorson will start. End of discussion

No Chores - I Disagree - Oliver will be named Saturday at the Scrimmage in Kenosha. According to Inside NU Fitz said the QBS will have a big day at the scrimmage. Just reading between the lines, I think Fitz is announcing the starting QB and its going to be Zack Oliver.

Go Cats !

purple11,
I read the InsideNU article and saw nothing to suggest that Oliver will be the starter. I'm sticking to my guns. Thorson will be named when the two-deep is announced on August 31.

No Chores - the 'read between the lines ' part is the date, I think Fitz announces Saturday. You are correct the article did not suggest who Fitz will start. That part is in the 'no brainer' category IMO It is OLIVER !

I'm kind of hoping for a two QB system where they switch by series or quarter depending on momentum.

Down vote. The skill sets between Thorson and Alviti aren't sufficiently different.

I'm all in on Thorson from day one, taking the lumps, and getting better as the season goes on. He's got so much upside.

Anyone that watched the recent episode of the hunt would know that Danial Kubiak (featured twice in the video) is clearly the leader in the competition. Kubiak, a walk on from Barrington HS, along with backup TJ Green and 3rd stringer Lloyd Yates will be featured this Saturday in the QB competition

Enjoy

I think its Thorson and I know that some of the senior leaders that fits is asking input want Thorson. Oliver missing days for his class in my opinion sealed his fate.

I don't believe Yates is 3rd string. Green is a much more sound QB than him and imo will earn a scholarship before he leaves here. IMO, Yates will be a sorta Eric Peterman, I'd be surprised if he sticks at QB by the end of this year. With the emergence of Green, I think they almost have to move Yates.

I think No Chores is correct, I doubt Fitz announces the QB publicly and that 'we' won't find out until the first snap. But, I'm fairly certain that we will get almost an even dose of Alviti and Thorson insomuch that it is insignificant who starts.

You are joking right? about Oliver going to class and 'sealing his fate' ...1. don' t you think Fitz expects/encourages them to attend class? 2. Really really do not think Oliver attending one class is going to stop Fitz from naming him the starter. Fitz knows ZO and his capabilities and strengths.

Go Cats !

True. Particularly since Pat was bragging about how NU can offer a Kellogg degree now as part of the overall value proposition. Using that logic, CJ will also not start since he is also in Kellogg.......

The class thing is more about missed reps, allowing Alviti and Thorson to take them and impress.

Right, I don't think anyone is saying that a player will miss a chance to start because of class, at least not at NU. They're just saying that going to class means he'll have a smaller chance of impressing the coaches.

<Speculation based on nothing other than this information>That said, it also makes me wonder if Oliver knows something we don't. He's a smart guy and would also know that he's missing out on precious reps could hurt his chances of winning the starting job. Maybe he already knows that he hasn't won the job so he was more easily excused for class. Of course, this is NU and Fitz we're talking about, so going to class is considered a very GOOD thing.</speculation based on nothing other than this information>

The first several possessions were 3 and out. WHy would that have changed and we would have given them very good field position to start their offense.

The 1st possession was 3 and out because we were backed up deep in our own endzone. Colter had to run a sneak just to get breathing room on first down. Mark got 2 on 2nd down. We went ultra-conservative on 3rd to get the punter another yard of breathing room. If we had started the game at the 22 yard line with the ball, I think we would've been more likely to get into a rhythm.

I remember reading that we didn't get past the initial game "script" until late in the 2nd qtr.

Only five people voted for "Week of August 24." Honestly, I'm shocked we found out this early, but I'm happy it happened nonetheless.

213 more hours.

Go Cats.
