The class of 2020 is off to a great start and we seem to be in the mix with an unprecedented number of top prospects. As things currently stand, NU's class of 2020 projects to be smaller (~15) but as we have become accustomed to lately, injuries, transfers and early draft departures (Paddy?) will likely pad that number by a few. Assuming 17 scholarships in total and with four commitments already in hand, I see the positional breakdown of the class as follows:
QB (1) Atkinson --- DE (2)
RB (2) Porter --- DT (1)
OL (3) --- LB (2)
WR (2) Yaseen --- CB (2) Joseph
TE (1) ---- S (1)
Given where things stand now, the biggest areas of need when factoring in upcoming graduations, existing depth and talent in my mind are OL, DL and CB. RB would have been on the list but with Porter's commitment already in hand and another RB commitment in the class of 2019 likely, I think the pressure to restock that position has lessened somewhat. I continue to feel the key to NU's continued on field success and path to further improvement lies in the recruitment of the OL and DL. We need to at least maintain and hopefully build on the recent uptick in DL recruiting and we need to seize on the program's momentum to meaningfully upgrade our OL recruiting. I also have some concerns about our future depth and talent at CB and believe we need another CB of Joseph's caliber in this class to shore up that positional group. I've started looking at class of 2020 offers and believe we have offered many recruits that would help shore up these areas. Our chances are more realistic with some of these A list offers than with others. Of the guys we have offered and have a realistic shot at, these are the 2020 recruits i would put a priority on:
- OT Jeff Persi out of California
- G/T Peter Skoronski out of illinois
- DL Deontae Craig out of Indiana
- DE Bryce Mostella out of Michigan
- DE Lance Keneley out of California
- CB Collin Gamble out of Texas
- DB/WR Cam Martinez out of Michigan
