Back when I became a wildcat fan 20 years ago and up through the early 2000's there was an announcer who was a poor man's version of Dave Eanet who made such calls as , "Damien Anderson the ball carrier" "Firsssttt doowwwnnnnnn" "Third doowwwnnnnn" I loved him and felt I was almost listening to the radio while watching the game live. He had emotion, etc even did one shout out to a key person in each game that only meant something to him and whoever it was he mentioned.

Then we had some very boring years of announcing.

I had lunch with the announcer of the basketball games and the football games at a BB event and although I like him for basketball, he seemed sorta drab for football, no emotion, no nothing. Well, I'm assuming it's the same guy now and it's good to see some extra noted energy when he says "JUSTIN Jackson the ball carrier" [shakes favorite line and I'll second that]. I like announcers who are not conservative and really speak the emotion that every fan is feeling.

I never met the announcer, but I've met the "Voice" of the band many times. He's this very tiny unassuming Jewish guy with this booming voice. You hear him talk, and it's like "no way, you're the voice."

Agree. We have also been noting that the announcer is more enthusiastic, a lot more enthusiastic this season. Are you sure it's the same guy?

I asked him if he was the announcer for football as well, and I believe he said he was if I remember correctly. I know he did two sports but my recollection of which one other than BB may be off. "Drew for Two"

The announcer during the last BIG championship season in 2000 was a big part of the fan experience. "DAMIAN Anderson THE BALL CARRIER" , etc. The announcer, this year for football, seems similar to that.

A couple years after my favorite announcer left, we had a monotone announcer who was like "Press 1 for..."

He credited me for a tackle at the 2001 MSU game. One of my favorite Wildcat memories.

The current football PA announcer is Gary Ross, who also does the PA for men's basketball. He's been doing both for years. I don't know if someone told him to turn up the enthusiasm or what, but he's been yelling like a maniac this year. I like how he uses his three pointer call on field goals: "Jack Mitchell FOR THREE!"

Yeah, he used to credit key people with opposition tackles. Someone said he moved away and retired somewhere in Missouri or around there. I think his last gig for NU was around 2003. I also remember a band director who was pretty cool back in the 90's when I first started following NU. I like excitement and enthusiasm at sporting events and both of those professionals exhibited it. A lot more band playing as well it seemed. "Be my girl" was played a lot. Now it seems only about one or two times a game as the band pretty much just seems to sit around and watch the game. Dunno, maybe I just don't hear them since they moved to the east side.

The band director was Stephen Peterson, who has now gone over to The Dark Side [tm] and is Director of Bands at Shampoo-Banana.

Yes, and people associated with visiting programs noticed, and complained. I can't say I blame them, either -- it's one thing to be enthusiastic, but giving deliberately false information is deeply unprofessional.

The visiting programs need to relax. Robots are professional.

Listening to the USC PA Announcer, not sure why we can't have the same level. Our guy plain sucks at football. Basketball is OK.

Yeah, very unprofessional to give fans an exciting moment. Don't want them to have a great time or anything.

I enjoy his "tackled by a _____ of Wildcats." Where he has progressed from plethora to multitude and a few other indefinite numericals that slip my mind. It sounds like he's having fun. It would be a great drinking game to toss one back every time he does this. The better our gang tackling, the drunker you get.

Your job as a PA announcer isn't to give a thrill to some guy you met in the parking lot, it's to announce the plays. You'll notice that announcer isn't employed by NU any longer.

He's also the P.A. announcer at the women's basketball games, and a good friend of mine.
