I know there's been some concern on The Rock recently about the performance of 2018 QB commit Jason Whittaker this season, so I wanted to point out some good news coming from Rockford (Mich.) this weekend. It looks like Whittaker had a breakout game:
Last week, Whittaker was also pretty good, completing 15 of 25 passes for 148 yards in a loss.
His play the first two weeks were pretty rough, however, and the source of the board angst. He went a combined 9 of 16 for just 138 yards in two games, with one TD and three INTs, and he got pulled in one of them.
But Whittaker probably isn't going to put up big numbers too often playing in Rockford's system. Last year, as a junior, he completed just 79 of 153 passes (51.6 percent) for 1,005 yards, with six TDs and six INTs, for the entire season. He also ran just 38 times for 209 yards.
So we're not going to see Andrew Marty-type numbers coming from Whittaker anytime soon. I don't think they'll ever be much better than this weekend's, in all likelihood. This is one of those situations where we're going to have trust the film and in-person evaluations of Mick McCall and the NU staff. Whittaker has very good size, he has a plus arm, and he's athletic. He was a kid recruited based on his potential and skills, not necessarily production.
