Last big we had who "stretched" was Nance and that did not work out well. Don't get me wrong, it would be nice to have that. But, if that were a must have criteria, it feels like chasing, for our purse, a unicorn.
I would not have spotted this dude were not for the fact I saw Indiana made contact with him. I have never seen him play. But he entered 3 days ago and, as you say, we are getting kind of desperate anyway.
Purdue is going to be scary good. Not only at the B1G, but also at a national level.

The beauty of our campus? Which basketball player makes his determination based on that?
Painter has a history of putting players in the NBA and making deep runs in the tournament. I don't think Evanston really trumps that play.
I knew you'd object in some way to something that is obvious to everyone else.
NU's campus and location on Lake Michigan near Chicago is far more appealing than Purdue's campus near the Wabash river in the middle of nowhere. This is where the players will live - and, because they are youthful human beings, the vast majority will prefer NU.
An advantage for Collins in recruiting, whether you admit it or not.
Up until last year, Painter had a history of getting upset in the tournament more than going deep. Not a lot of Purdue players in the pro’s. Edey, Ivey and ? I may be forgetting some others.
But he’s a very good coach and the program does a great job of retaining and developing players. The appeal next year is that you are joining an already very, very good team. Chance to play in a Final Four.

I agree, he has that history as well.
For kids 16-18, he's put a player in the NBA in 2024, 2023, 2022, and 2021, 2019, and 2018 - along with five or six more kids in the G league, and who knows how many overseas.
He's taken a team to the tournament every year since 2012. So he's taken teams to the tourney every year since most of those kids have been in kindergarten. Included in that time is four sweet 16s, an elite 8, and a national championship game.
In the scheme of things, I think kids who believe they have a future in basketball will look at that a lot more favorably than being a few blocks away from the red line into Chicago. I also think there are several other schools that would provide better pro opportunities.
In the overall scheme of things, I think kids would consider other factors before how many NBA alumni there are from a school. It’s obvious that if you got the talent, the NBA will find you whether you go to Duke or to Murray State.

I would have expected more current NBA players than just Edey and Ivey.
But it seems that celebrated Purdue players like Vince Edwards, Carsen Edwards, Caleb Swanigan and AJ Hammons only last 1-3 years in the NBA.
Which suggests that Painter is getting about as much as he can out of his players - they generally don't improve at the NBA level.
And its probably a bit of a knock on the Big Ten, given Painter's overall success.
Or just evidence that Painter's the best coach in the Big Ten.
Its a little ironic that NU and Purdue both have 2 NBA players right now.

Yes he is. There are very few fan bases of good programs that don’t think their team should be better. I don’t think he saved his job last year but if they had not reached the Sweet 16 he would have been under a lot of scrutiny despite the consistent success without the 5 star recruits.

I would agree with you but the interesting thing to me is how big money attracts fans like moths to a flame. Everyone loves to speculate how they can add magical free agents. Every team is in-play for championships every year based on the more money and making good decisions. Throw in gambling and all the hype generated by TV to attract viewers. Seems like the more money and chaos the more fans like to participate.
Most of the mid major forums I check are bemoaning the end of their competitiveness and a new future of being developmental teams that lose not only their best players, but their average players as well, every year.

As somebody who generally agrees with you on these sorts of issues, noticing unusually and humorously white basketball teams is just good Chapelle Show, Key and Peele, etc. type 2000s comedy fodder that reasonable people of all races with a sense of humor can share a few Dad jokes and a laugh about. THat's how you get nicknames like Cream Abdul Jabbar for that overweight, pasty, goggle wearing stretch 4 who starred for Indiana State two years ago.

Dawson Garcia is apparently in the portal. Notable because he has played 5 years so he should be out of eligibility. He appeared in 16 games in 2021-22 for North Carolina before leaving the team to tend to a family illness situation. I assume his waiver is based on not finishing that season (he played in at least 26 games in each of his other 4 seasons), but if he were to be ruled eligible after playing in 16 games then I believe a certain guy on our team would have grounds for asking for an extra year (if he wanted to).
Garcia played 5 full seasons. Barnheizer only played 4. How would Garcia get a waiver??
Garcia played in 20-21, which is the year that didn't count toward eligibility, so in the eyes of the NCAA they've both played 4 years.
There are other players out of eligibility who have entered the portal, like Mustapha Amzil of New Mexico and Jabri Abdur-Rahim of Providence. If Abdur-Rahim wins a medical redshirt despite playing in 22 games this season, then Barnhizer would definitely have a case. Again, I don't know if he'd want to come back and it seems like the NCAA would only set this very lenient precedent if they were on the cusp of just giving everyone 5 years anyway.
