The Colts worked out free agent NT Barry Cofield on Tuesday.

Cofield, 31, was dumped by the Redskins in February and hadn't drawn any previously-known interest before now. His body has fallen apart in recent years, requiring hip surgery and sports-hernia surgery. When healthy, Cofield was a very versatile lineman who played the run well and rushed the passer.

It is a young mans game.

That 2004 team had Cofield, Luis Castillo, Loren Howard, McGarigle, Marquice Cole, Nick Roach, and Bryan Heinz, among others.
Front 4 also had 5th year senior Colby Clark. Clark, Cofield, Howard, Castillo. Yet Coach Colby was scared of Tommy Chang and we couldn't get to him as he tossed for new Hawaii records and about 600 total yards against us as our bowl chances went down in defeat.

And still the D was questionable

Questionable? The D had three NFL starters on it, and arguably none of those was the best player on the defense, which was probably Loren Howard. Statistically speaking, the D was:
  • 9th in pass defense
  • 8th in rush defense
  • 8th in total defense
  • 9th in pass defense efficiency
  • 11th in giving up first downs
  • 11th in opponents 3rd down conversions
That team was 4th in total offense that year, and 5th in scoring offense, putting up 24.6 points per game. What the defensive coaching staff failed to achieve with arguably our most talented defensive team is legendary.

It seems to me that we went through a pretty lean period with our secondary. That certainly has not been the case in recent years with guys like Phillips, Mabin, Peters, McManis, Campbell, NVH, Harris, etc. But I think those 2003-2007 teams suffered from pretty poor CB play.

We were pressuring Tommy Chang in the first half, and he was flustered. Then Castillo went out with an injury and Chang suddenly had all the time he needed to throw. Castillo was key.

Well sure.....that, and the refs. Let's not forget how much of a homer dimension they played in the Rainbow Warriors win (which they did again the following week vs. Sparty).

I was trying to be kind. Sucked rotten eggs was what I was thinking.

The importance of a good secondary is that they generally limit big plays.

With that O and those guys on D hard to believe that we needed that game for a bowl. Notice that now Hawaii comes here to play. Back then they never did.
