How far is Fitz from recruiting his best class ever? What would it take?

It has got to already be the best Illinois class ever, right?

Pretty exciting to be a Wildcats fan these days.

Go Cats!!!

While I'm just as excited about the recent commits as anyone... realistically, about three years. That's usually long enough to see whether the recruiting hype matches actual production.

No. His best class was 2014, with 4 4*s:

Thorson
Dickerson
JJTBC
Westphal

Hance, Doles, Vault, McGee, XWas, Queiro and Nate Hall have all played significant roles so far.

That class was 8th in the Big 10.

2014 class is hard to beat, both at the time (ranking) and actual performance on the field. JJTBC, Thorson, Hance and Westphal from IL. That's three four-stars and a high 3.

That said, really like our 2018 class so far, and it's still early.

I think the 2017 recruiting class has a chance to be pretty special.

The 2014 group will be hard to top in terms of accolades and on field contribution. 11 starters in that group, and every guy has played at least a bit (Prather, Oxley, and Westphal with minor roles).

This was pre-Fitz, but the 2001 class had Baz, Strief, Essex, Castillo, Backes, Fields, and Dom Price.

There was also the Napo, Damian Anderson class that I recall as being pretty darn good.

Pretty good case to be made for 2010: Mark, Colter, Siemian, Campbell, Ariguzo, Ellis, McEvilly, Vitabile, Jorgensen, Hall, Tony Jones, Lawrence. VERY few real misses in that class.
