And in the next paragraph, the author says IU is the best job in Indiana. Who faces more pressure: The Illinois coach to get black players from the CPL, or the IU coach to get white players from the state championship?

Why does that matter? The schools are in different states. Within Indiana, there are 4 top-tier programs: IU, PU, ND and Butler. Then there are a smattering of second tier programs: Evansville, Valpo, IUPUI, IUPFW, Ball State. Very difficult home state recruiting environment.

I just thought it was interesting that the pressure to recruit was enough reason to push down Illinois but not Indiana. It might be an apples to oranges comparison.

I think it is a relative comparison between NU (where the resources are now being spent in facilities and salaries) and Illinois who just sacked a coach out of frustration. If Illinois was a better job wouldn't Collins have jumped there?;)

Both things are possible: Job A is objectively better based on several criteria than Job B, and a person may be better suited to Job B. I think Collins is almost perfectly suited to NU and the number of jobs that appeal to him may not exceed 1 ... and that there are several objective reasons that might make Illinois the better job.

As a longtime IU fan (until McIntosh verballed to Northwestern), IU fans couldn't give a rats ass about the color of a player. They want the next Alan Henderson or Calbert Cheaney to stay in state and play at Indiana. Ask any IU fan who they want out of the 2018 class and your answer will be Romeo Langford. He's not white. What a dumb statement.

I hear you. But people always associate basketball in the state of Indiana with a love of Larry Bird (I know he graduated from state). You also get some fans who swear up and down that Steve Alford was the best Hoosier ever. But they really do love all their players regardless of color. And for the record, Isiah Thomas was the best, period.

Collins is a Chicago boy.The cornfields of CHAMBANA are a long way from that.

A lot of interesting picks: Creighton over UNL (now that I think of it, actually a pretty easy choice), San Diego State over UCLA, St. Mary's, Cal and a zillion others.

Easiest choice must have been Wyoming, since it is the only D1 school there.

Collins was down to Illinois and Duke when he was picking schools....He never considered Northwestern.....

I'm not sure what the summer of 1991 has to do with anything. But, yeah, coming off an 0-18 Big Ten season, Northwestern somehow wasn't much of a draw for the would be Mr. Basketball of Illinois.

Nevertheless, 26 years later, the Northwestern basketball program is the best in the state. Go figure.

I would suggest that Collins is finding NU to be a better fit for him each season.
It was certainly not a fit for him coming out of Highschool. Truth is, he was too good for the program at that time.

He took a bit of a chance coming to NU. I say a bit because had he failed, he could had blamed the whole situation. No one had succeeded before after all.

His progress has been about as good as any reasonable person could hope for (maybe better):

1: Progressively higher win total each year
2: First appearance in NCAA Tournament
3: First tourney win.
4: Competitive salary and budget for assistants via endowment.
5: $110,000,000.00 Arena and facility up grade in the face of $300,000,000.00 athletic center being built at the same time.
6: Near sainthood if he can take his most mature and talented team so far just a little further down the current road.

This is all happening with a scat hole for number 6 that if he fails to improve this year, it can all likely be blamed on the difficulties of temporary practice and playing facilities.

CC is really in a good spot at NU. A spot that is pretty much his own making but has come with good institutional support too. Not every coach is living this dream.

yes he choose DUKE, right? Now 26 years later he has chosen NU over others. Don't see Illinois as final choice anywhere.

What happened in 1991 isn't really relevant to 2017.

A job offer from Lehman Bros in 1991 would have been an amazing opportunity. Not so much in 2017.

Same with Kodak, AOL, Saturn Corp, Circuit City, etc.

Poor Illini, you're rapidly becoming the Rodney Dangerfield of the Big Ten, aren't you? You have all of the state school advantages, but you can't get your crap together in either of the big-money sports.

You just hired Underwood, who is marginally better than Bruce Weber--the guy you used to employ.

I think that you should have kept Bruce Weber if this was the road that you wanted to go down.

1- Bruce took SIU to the Sweet 16 before landing at U of I. Brad's never been to the Sweet 16.
2- Bruce was 47 when you hired him. Brad is already 53.

Bruce > Brad until further notice

The rumors were that Illinois sent out feelers to Collins and his agent/people before they hired Groce and he was not interested. The rumors were that CC definitely turned down Illinois State even though I believe the court is named after his dad. IMHO, he saw the potential at NU and a chance to make his own tradition and legacy and not following in the footsteps of his dad or Coach K.

Chris Collins was interviewed on the Score in Chicago this morning and made it clear that he is not going anywhere and NU is the perfect place for he and his family.

He also said the game in the NBA is changing and trickling down to the NCAA is changing to position-less teams with everyone being able to hit threes like GS. He mentioned that the Bulls might pick OG Anunoby who is coming off a knee surgery, but has tremendous upside. A pick of OG in the NBA first round (16th pick) should calm the doom and gloomers who are saying that Aaron Falzon might not be able to recover from his knee surgery.

Interesting to note that the Big 10 has only projected one player to be picked in the first round in Indiana's OG Anunoby. Caleb Swanigan has fallen to the second round and Melo Trimble, Peter Jok, James Blackmon look not to be drafted. Maryland fans never liked my telling them that Melo is headed for NBDL. They thought he was a lottery pick.

I admit that I have not watched the NBA, other than the occasional highlight I see on PTI, in over 40 years, or since Bill Russell retired, but I have long marveled at the apparent differences between the college and pro games. Swanigan was a beast in the college game - clearly the best player I saw in the Big Ten. Yet, he is not a first rounder. Baffling. My confusion goes back to the days of Butch Lee, Scott May, and others - this is not new, just confusing.

There is very little room in the NBA for anything other than the absolute best athletes with the most upside regardless of college production (same in the NFL). Yes, NBA teams make a lot of mistakes in the draft but this is their model and it is not gonna change anytime soon.

A guy falling does not mean he is a bad player. Its that generally the league feels he does not have the upside of the competition in the draft. Swanigan is an example of this. The GMs probably feel his game will struggle against bigger more athletic players, the type of player he never faced in college on a regular basis. He will have to prove them wrong.

CC's people reached out to UI when Weber was fired. He told confidants that he thought the Illini job was the perfect fit for him. If you truly know any insiders who are close to Chris, they will confirm my comment. Chris is terrific, but the NU job is not even close to the UI job; a hot sunny day is not evidence of climate change.
Furthermore, national pundits are hailing the Underwood hire as a steal made possible by Okie States inept AD. Time will tell, my guess is Chris will be an NBA coach in three years. Chris is great, but a programs value and greatness is often measured by its ability to sustain excellence when a guy like him leaves. Illinois had a great run of coaches from Henson to Kruger to Self and even Weber as long as he had Bill's recruits. Unlike NU, Illinois can survive bad coaches and bounce back, it will be infinitely more difficult at NU.

Wow, now I'm triggered! Did you just bash NU's athletic programs, say our basketball coach is leaving in 3 years despite his claims, AND deny climate change all in the same post? Congrats on finding a way to completely lose my respect in under 200 characters.

The climate change reference was sarcasm, and we'll see if I'm correct regarding Chris. I stand by the rest my post as it is objective commentary. I don't know you and your respect is irrelevant, but my ties and sources to both programs are collectively better than virtually anyone on this Board.

Well aren't you just a BSD.

Illinois is so GOOOD! Such high program VALUE and GREATNESS! Too bad they can't figure out how to hire decent coaches for these easy "bounce backs" to excellence. So I guess you'll have to continue trying to pompously convince fans of currently successful programs how glorious the Illinois athletic program was (is?) until they can figure out how to avoid clown coaches and achieve a modicum of success on the court or field.

The best basketball team in NU's history lost to a lousy coach and his crappy team, twice.

Everyone knows this....given the choice, everyone outside of this board knows which program he would have picked if both jobs were offered to him at the same time. On a side note, the Collins family considered moving to Bloomington when Chris Collins was considering scholarship offers so they could commute to Champaign to watch him play...

Just visiting Champaign is tough, but living in Bloomington too?

What could be worse?

We can move to Baghdad then commute to Aleppo?

Nope.

We can move to Lagos then commute to Accra?

No.

We can move to Medillin then hop over to Caracas?

Closer.

I'm sure this got a lot of consideration from the Collins family.

People who have been following college basketball for 7 months should stop talking.....Collins seriously considered Illinois but Henson took Richard Keene from the StLouis area because he needed a guard and did not want to wait. Keene was the higher rated player at that time.

I'll bet everyone outside this board thought Chris Collins was a lock to play for Illinois, didn't they? Fact is, everyone on this board knows that you have no idea whether Chris Collins would have accepted an offer from Illinois.

Not much to add, how good a job is, is obviously subjective. But you guys should take it easy on trashing part of your state like it's a hellhole. It's just bad taste. It makes you guys look like especially blind haters when Champaign regularly ranks highly on top college town lists, and non-NU visitors regularly have a great time going out in CU and think the campus and facilities are pretty. Not to mention Bloomington-Normal is an awesome community to raise a family in.

NU can still be a world class university with a beautiful campus, awesome location and bright athletic future without degrading the University of Illinois and Chaimpaign to the point of making yourself look like a lunatic.

Hilarious that a U of I fan comes onto an NU board to defend his college town and misspells its name
