Bilas Bias

The Purdue summary he wrote with these ranking was telling - to the effect that Edey is gone, but they aren't going away - with very little real explanation beyond Smith and Loyer. Painter is a great coach but if anything CC as out-coached them in the past 2 years. To based hopes on Smith and Loyer - who are going to be much more aggressively defended without Edey around - is batty. Could have written the same summary for NU but it would be far more convincing, with Matt, Ty, Barny, Mart, Hunger, the emergence of Mullins, and the transfers/additions. Anyway, we'll get fuel from this snub, so the bias is AOK with me.

I'll admit I looked at the list and expected to see NU somewhere on it (though close to the bottom), but I don't feel snubbed or that there is any bias. Let's face it, we don't know that much about a lot of these teams either. Dayton at 54 is pretty much the same as NU at 75 (or wherever they might be on Bilas' list if he kept going). Tomorrow night, we can more accurately compare the two teams, and over the course of the next few months NU will play themselves into his top 68 or not.

Purdue has done it much longer than NU, so they get the benefit of the doubt before anyone knows anything.

Why are you surprised? We lost our all everything PG, And another top scorer and we have a group of top returning player coming back from injury. Plus horrible history. How would be in the top group yet?
The (maybe catchy) title of my thread speaks to the fact that I am not that surprised, but I do think they are biased wrong. I mean - we were a sure Sweet 16 team last year if we did not have injuries late in the year. I don’t feel the loss of Boo/Ryan drops us THAT far down…but we do have to still prove ourselves to the media rather than get any benefit of the doubt, to your point and to our pre-season BIG ranking.

Bilas has 14 big ten teams on his list ahead of Northwestern and therefore tracks the media big ten media poll picking Cats at 16th. More bulletin board fodder for the team!

Barny is still not available and we still do not know when he is returning or if he will have lingering issues and he is the top rated guy on the team that is returning. Berry is returning from season ending injury and Nicholson just got back as well. That is the other three starters not named Buie or Langborg that are no longer here. It is not a slight. There is really no way to rate us higher at this point. Good news is by the end of the season this will all be worked out on the court.

Fair argument, though I guess you give him credit for analyzing all of that - I am not as sure he does. Does he really consider that Berry and Nicholson will not be the players they have been? Does he know anything about Barney’s injury? Where would you have us ranked?

He is not necessarily saying that they will not be. But reality is it is a total unknown at this point. That Barney is still not able to play makes it the top 3 scorers from last year and second best guy on that team. And even when he gets back it will take at least 2-4 weeks to get into any kind of game shape and we have a couple conference games early in Dec where not having him could make a big difference in the season. He is still not playing and this is a big game tonight where Dayton is favored,

Really hard to know what we have this year and with our history showing we live on a very thin margin, we will not get the benefit of the doubt. It is reasonable for him to not consider us yet. Hopefully we can earn it as the season progresses

We have highly intelligent computer systems to do this now which are used heavily by people setting important betting lines and placing major wagers, how somebody can sucker their media employer into letting them pointlessly handwrite a list like this based on vibes is beyond me. Good for Jay Bilas getting paid the big bucks to do something a million times worse than just logging onto KenPom.com.
