‘Cats add a rim protector and a sharpshooter in the portal, go 25-7 and earn a 4 seed.

Martinelli scores 24.6 ppg, leads the nation in scoring… and js named 2nd team all BIG again.

Windham makes “the leap” and is also 2nd team all BIG.

Gonna be a rough year. Lots of growing pains with such a young team. Defense will suffer with so much inexperience.

But there will be moments and stretches where this group shines. A few wild ass predictions:

KJ will have a 30 point game.

Gelo will become a very good defender

Singleton will play a lot

Hunger will transfer

Hunger and Blake Smith. Book it. And no surprise, but Clayton still likely to go.

Could be two big guys and sharpshooter as grad transfers. And one second year player a la Audige and Mullins.

Obviously Martinelli is our best player but concerned that Windham would transfer which would be awful. A guy that looks like he will a tremendous player with three years remaining. I have no idea how NIL deals work, we need to keep that guy.

No.

You guys aren't paying attention. Collins has built a culture where guys buy into the family thing. Clayton has a bright future as a Cat. He earned his playing time, and if Collins wants him to stay, he will stay. I think Hunger stays if Collins wants him. No one is going to shell out big NIL for him. Don't know about Barkley.

I see two guys, Mart and KJ, who will develop into players good enough to start on a Tourney team. To get to .500 in the Big10 next year, we will need to bring in a strong defensive center, a serious wing and a scoring guard. We get that, we're good. If we don't, I see 5 or 6 wins in conference because I think the balance of our existing group are back-up-level players, and while I think 2 of our freshmen will play, I think they will be part-timers in their first year. All of this assumes starters stay healthy, which hasn't been a good bet recently.I

Re the portal, I think Mart is home here and I think Windham's pay-day is the year after next. Others may or may not leave to play more elsewhere and that's OK for me.

I see us loading up in the portal. Can't find more than 2-3 losses on the schedule, to be honest.

See you in *checks notes* goddamnit the 26 final four is in ****ing INDIANAPOLIS

What are you talking about? Martinelli is already a proven commodity, with two NCAA tournaments under his belt and a B1G scoring crown as a junior. He should’ve been first team All B1G. He doesn’t need to “develop” into a tournament player, he already is. He’s a baller and he puts in the work.

The core is there.

KJ, Mullins, Clayton all showed good improvement. I would be comfortable with KJ as the shooting guard and Clayton as primary ball handler. Angelo will continue to improve, I expect a huge jump next year.

The first years are an unknown but definitely the potential is exciting. Singleton, Bennerman, Kropp all have size. West is the sleeper, he could be very good. Gill might need a year or two.

From the portal add one big and one 3-point gunner, we should be set.

I see KJ as the primary ball handler next year. Clayton still has to turn his back and guard the ball a bit too much, and he's not as quick laterally. Likely they'll share the role, along with Nick, like the end of this year.

The big mystery is the mystery big imho.

Both Hunger and Smith likely will graduate this year, so It’s probably better for both to seek a program where they have a bigger role. Barkley doesn’t look like he’ll ever be in the rotation, so it depends on how much he values the parchment. A lower level academic could be in his future. Clayton made good strides and it seems odd that he would leave after giving up the redshirt. Of course, I have zero insight and this is merely speculation.

We'll have to see what Collins tells Hunger about his future at Northwestern. He had similar conversations with Ryan Young and Barrett Benson, and Miller Kopp too. All those guys seemingly were told they weren't guaranteed any increased playing time, and all three left. If Collins has the same message for Hunger, then it's bye-bye.

Most improved player - as prognosticated by CCC in the pre-season press conference - was Martinelli. That was true. Next year, I'm guessing Mullins. He matured so much this year, has a very high basketball IQ, and is a great athlete. Curious to hear other views on "most improved" for next year.

Typing too fast to awkward sentence construction. Yes, Mart is more than there. KJ is less of a sure thing.

We have no idea until we see what happens in the portal but we need a center, a pass-first PG and a shooter. I am extremely bullish on Mart and KJ. Mullins can definitely play. The rest idk.

I can align with you that at this point, Mullins would be a strong guess. He boosted his %Min in B1G games from 7.9 to 52.6 this season, yet in BOLD were his improvements (19 conference games)

I'd note that his TO Rate may not have improved, but it's a good sign that despite increased usage, that stayed stable.

Wonderings:
  • Mullins was very effective as a Sanjay Lumpkin-type player (low possession/shots, but quite efficient). Does he stay as effective if he moves up as a higher priority option in the offense?
  • In hindsight, it felt like he missed 3FGs, but 34.2% is a decent threat at around 2 3FGA per game. Can he get that up to 36% and increase those takes to 3 triple tries per game?
    • His double digit scoring games were driven by great distance shooting nights (4/5 vs USC, 3/5 vs Washington, 2/4 vs Iowa)
    • FWIW, he shot 34.1%, 14/41 as a frosh for UDenver, so we know 34% isn't necessarily a fluke.
  • Now that I'm in this rabbit hole, I jumped over to Torvik and looked at Mullins' FGA breakdown
SeasonFGA"Close 2""Far 2"3PT Jumper
2025 (19 B1G Games)75 FGA42.6%6.6%50.6%
2024 (31 total Games UDenver, Summit League)222 FGA50%22.5%27.4%

    • He really evolved his game to reflect the more "modern" sensibility of efficient basketball - 93% of his takes were 3FG or Rim attacks. I don't envision him going full Barnhizer/Leach and embracing the mid-range 2 in his senior year. So, hopefully he can get that 3FG shooting stroke down pat as that's going to be the area where he can really increase his production.
  • Finally, he's already got the makings of being an elite defensive player - perhaps not necessarily showing up in the box score (for example, he can harrass passes to become steals, but those aren't accredited to him), but perhaps for his versatility: at 6'6" and with long reach and excellent fundamentals, he can switch off from 1-4 reliably.

Agreed. Like a locust, Clayton emerged over the past few games. I have a hard time seeing him go as he almost assured of 20mpg next season, as we have one other viable lead guard right now (I don't think Gill and West will be ready to give meaningful minutes next year).

Hunger seems to be in the opposite boat. His minutes declined and the production has been very spotty.

Hopefully the Clayton decision will be entirely based on what CCC thinks of him. If he likes Clayton and Windham as the two primary ball handlers next year he can stay, if he feels a major veteran is needed, he can go. Personally I'd still rather see Clayton go and somebody Leech or better be brought in, but 1. CCC can scout his team better than me and I support whatever direction he goes and 2. Maybe we have the ability to bring in a point if the right other exits occur anyway.

I would go with Gelo. Clearly has the athleticism and he isn’t afraid. He struggled to figure it out and was subpar on defense. He was almost unplayable. Next year, I suspect he will be a completely different player that contributes on both ends. His offensive upside is there and I think he could be a double digit scorer.

Don't really disagree. Now that the COVID bonanza is over, I am not sure how many highly quality guards will be available. Leach was a real find--an outlier IMO.

Scoring is going to be an issue. I have a lot of confidence in KJ developing (love his stroke), but we really need a guy to replace Ty's shooting (from the second half of the season) and (ideally) a big who is a credible threat to score (someone with Keenan's offensive skills would be great, but without his defensive liabilities).

Mullins could become the 3 and D guy that Ty was. But that's very uncertain.

Lots of work to do this offseason (for our current and incoming players) to make this team viable for a tournament bid.

We have money and renewed flexibility and I'm optimistic. NU Hoops to the moon.
