Pitino produced a 15-win improvement from last season, including a NINE-win improvement in the B1G (from 8-23 (2-16) to 23-8 (11-7)). NU improved by just one win overall, 2 in the B1G.
Minny's was the biggest one-year turnaround by any D1 program this year.

Because, for those of us who actually follow the teams and not just the stats, Little Richie was essentially rewarded for taking a talented team (far more talented than Collins' squad) and turning them into a absolute dumpster fire last season. If he wasn't so terrible last year, the improvement this year (helped by the school getting rid of the bad apples that were recruited last year) would not have been so dramatic.

So it's commendable to have an absolute shit team and then follow that up with a good team? Why does he get more credit for the cluster truck that was last year's Minny team?

I don't follow the Gophers. But they went through a lot of adversity that season which need not be Pitino's fault (at least not all of it). They los FIVE players to graduation to begin with (at least THAT wasn't RP's fault). They suspended and eventually lost another player to an assault accusation. Then, late in the season suspended three additional players because of a sex tape posting.
I suppose those who gave Pitino the award didn't blame him much for the above incidents, but did give him ton of credit for the ensuing turnaround a year later.

Arguments could go either way on coach of the year. A case could definitely be made for Collins or Pitino. Not a fan of either Pitino as trouble seems to follow them and their programs but voters don't count this in voting. The most important thing he is our coach and has done nothing but produce steady improvement.
