Also, I think he learned his lesson at Arkansas. It's not like Alabama is going to come calling. He's a Big Ten coach and a good one. Both Bert and ILL are humble enough to stick together. Bert has done a good job. He’s not overflowing with talent at all. Way better than what they have had the last 2 decades.
None of those guys had a season like Stone did last year. He was also the starter at the beginning of this year for a CFP bound team. I think Stone is much closer to a Ben Bryant comparison than any of those guys.

I'll tell ya, I would have benched Bryant in 2023 in favor of Sullivan until the Minn breakout game. Bryant had done nothing and Sully had looked good in garbage time. Then we saw how Sullivan did against Neb and Iowa - woof. Then Ben came back and rescued the Cats (and Braun)

In hindsight, he sorta didn’t do you any favors. Forced them to make him the permanent replacement, when perhaps hiring a more qualified coach would’ve been better in the long run. He caught fire for a month and a half with another coach’s roster and staff, but the (small sample size) evidence so far would suggest he’s in over his head when doing it on his own. So far.
There were few other candidates. Fitz left such a toxic mess that nobody wanted the job.
