Class of 2016: Now What?

No. Hate that strategy. Absolutely hate it. I've always been a "bird in hand is worth two in the bush" guy when it comes to recruiting. You never know when that last guy in the recruiting class might turn into a good player (i.e. Chance Carter), but you know even less about who you might be able to get in the next recruiting cycle.
Barnett always said, it isn't the guys you miss but the guys you sign that don't produce that are the problem. The guys we have been recruiting this year come off back to back 5-7 seasons while the guys we get next year will come off a top 25, 10 or 11 win team. If the guys we pick up with the last couple schollies are top targets or a guy who would have been a top target suddenly falls (decommit or guy is suddenly interested because of how we have done this year) into our lap, great, but sure no reason to reach at this point.

Interestingly I have know many programs who agree with you. The coaches use every ride available because it is so difficult to predict who actually becomes a good player.

Sherrick McManus or XMan come to mind as last second pick ups. Agree that you use the scholies that you have, cuz you never know who will transfer, get injured, graduate early, etc... Plus you can always encourage little used 4th year players to graduate and move on to free up a scholie if you need it.

Or you could go 5-7 or 6-6 next season. Use them all.

Even if next years record is not as good, we have a lot more eyes watching because of this year. The foundation of next years class is based on this year as many are committed before next year even starts. Use the scholies if they are for A list guys of fill a real need but I sure would not be reaching just to use the scholarship

I think they'll try to land Jovan Swann and that'll be the end of the 2016 class.

I think you are correct with one caveat. If a solid WR decommits from another program, then Fitz will find a way to grab him.

Makes sense to me. An A level target in area of need. That may change if a solid plum drops into our lap that we cannot pass up.

Corbi, I know we have a bunch of younger depth at CB, but don't you think that this class needs another CB? Bullock projects as a safety, leaving only RoCamp as the only CB in this class. I think Mangram fits the bill nicely.

In stark contrast to pretty much the known history of Northwestern football, cornerback is one of the positions I'm least worried about heading into 2016 (and beyond). Watkins, McShepard, Westphal, and Hartage have already showed promise on Saturdays. I've heard some very good things about both Mayo and Williams. Throw in Campbell, and we have a whole lot of young talent at that position.

I'm always for taking as many big people as possible. It's harder to project how they'll develop, so the late take could end up being the best of the bunch. This year, I would also have to consider taking a flyer on a wideout given the lack of depth and productivity at that position.

I agree with GCG. While you can always can use another good corner, I feel very comfortable with the depth at CB and feel we have other areas that are a bigger priority. I like Mangram as a prospect but it does not sound like we are still actively involved with him. Besides, when having to pick between a lineman or skill position player, I will always prefer the lineman. Games are won and lost at the line of scrimmage.

Have you given up on Foster?

I have not but I am not sure the staff is prioritizing him. If they wanted him, they would have already offered him and at this point it is not clear that we have. I think he may be a backup for us. The offer may come if we cannot land a guy like Swann. I will say that the OL offers for the class of 2017 look very strong and that may play into the Foster decision. I really like Gerak and it looks like we are solidly in the lead for Slater and Miranda. I would encourage everyone to watch the HUDL highlights for these three kids. Very impressive especially considering the high level of competition that all three are playing against.
