Collins going at it with Wisc assistants in the hand shake line?

I can't believe anyone has a problem with this. Even if the game was effectively over, he's still right there under the basket, and you only get a chance to do a punctuation dunk in a huge game so many times. Let him have his fun.

The assistant coach for Wisky who took affront to the Lumpkin dunk was Joe Krabbenhoft. Krabby was a former player at UW who was similar to Lumpkin in his blue collar style. It is ironic for him to be claiming that a NU player was playing too hard or in an unsportsmanlike manner when he did so for his four years at UW. I would ignore it. It shows you that Gard does not run a tight ship with his assistant coaches. The times are changing in the Big 10 and ex-jocks like Krabbenhoft can't get out of the fact that NU just took it to UW in Madison.

I really don't get it.

When the margin is under 10 pts and there's still time on the clock and the other team is still playing to win, your objective is to get the ball down court and if the opportunity is there, to score.

Maybe Gard was upset because NU beat the varmits two years in a row.

Does anyone remember when Isiah Thomas scored like 12 pts in 15 seconds at the end of game that looked like the Pistons had lost to the Lakers in the Championship.

In the situation BMac was in it would have been wrong to tell him to not make the pass. Ditto Sanjay.

Poor sportsmanship by Wisconsin to make that an issue. I hope Happ goes pro this year.

Reggie miller did something similar to the knicks and didn't we see a crazy finish with New Mexico and someone else this year overcoming a deficit at the end. Missing free throws and knocking down threes can cut a lead in a hurry

If they thought the game was over they should have backed off Mac and let the clock run down. Lumpkin did what anyone in that situation would have done given the significance of the game. It was an exclamation point that our program has arrived ! Collins was very complimentary in the post game about Wisconsin's program. Enjoy the moment.

With Purplejustice on this one - Wisky was pressuring the ball and would have loved to create a turnover and grab another basket. Not quite sure they would not have expected Lumpkin's finish.

Even Mac during the pressed said that in hindsight maybe they should have pulled it out. But he then went on to describe the dunk as the punctuation mark of the game. I took his comment as a form of sorry, not sorry. ;)

A few things from my perch in the cheap seats at the Kohl Center (which is an fantastic venue, by the way):

1. Sanjay had a bunch of family and friends in attendance from Wayzata. No wonder he was excited as he streaked past the bench with a few ticks left.

2. Sanjay played an incredible game. His double-teaming on Happ was brilliantly executed, and his man-to-man as Nigel Hayes repeatedly tried to back him down was huge. Badger fans couldn't believe that Nigel couldn't just "take him." Sanjay's 3 from the corner was a dagger.

3. I listened to local Badger radio on the way home. The commentators noted the fact that UW coaches seemed irked in the handshake line due to Sanjay's dunk, but also admitted that the Badgers have been known to add their unnecessary exclamation points at the end of games, so turnabout is fair play.

4. Krabbenhoft was the post-game guest on the radio show. He only gave mild credit to the Wildcats, and although he didn't mention the dunk specifically, he made a lot of noise about "meeting the Wildcats again" in the BTT. Get over it, Joe.

5. I met a grand total of zero d-bag Badger fans. They were all friendly and gracious, if a little shell-shocked in defeat. Quite a contrast from the usual beer-fueled behavior at Camp Randall.

I'm pretty sure the Wisconsin coaches were embarrassed by their actions after the game. Hence, you heard nothing about it in the post game presser and you won't get any comments from them.

And if they had fouled BMac, would it have been wrong to make the free throws?

Our players exhibit wisdom beyond their years in taking the high road and downplaying the basket by taking some responsibility for it. Very Sun Tzu like to defuse the emotion and not give Wisconsin any more fuel, as we obviously will see them later in the conference tourney or next year.

Purdue fan here and I'm amazed anyone would take exception to that. As someone mentioned, Wisconsin was up pressing so they obviously hadn't given up on the game. If they didn't want Northwestern to attempt to score again, then drop back into a half-court defense and I'm sure Collins would have been happy to dribble out the clock.

Congrats on that win. Tightens things up at the top of the conference. The next few weeks should be fun.

Sounds to me as if someone was upset over the realization they no longer have a Doormat in Chicago.

to be completely honest I think the biggest source of lasting discussion about this is the thread here, where NU fan after NU fan has posted in with mock outrage about how a Wisconsin assistant got mad for a few seconds after the game. i'm pretty sure they're long since over it, and I don't see UW fans broadly that are angry or even noticed or cared much about it. no one on any national network or anything else is talking about anything relating to the game other than that we played well and got a HUGE win.

one coach said one thing that he probably didn't need to, he was out of line, Gard and Wisconsin have moved past it, we should too. we have a 50 post echo chamber of all of us repeating the same thing and trying to create controversy... don't worry, not a story here, no one did anything wrong it's just basketball.

great win Cats, on to Maryland!

I assure you my outrage is very real and I will not be silenced!

Krabby seems like an appropriate nickname here.

.....

The irony though is that once ESPN's Sport Center put together its highlight feature on our game last night they chose that play to close out the segment with the concurrent commentary referencing Northwestern putting "the exclamation point on its win" as the visual showed the ball being slammed into the basket.

Read their boards. It's a mixed bag and some are pissed. The one takeaway there is that Gard did a blow by and the started yelling back at Collins after the line prior to waking off. I guess he got over it, but was clearly pissed.

Indignation is valuable currency in this brave new world. Never let an opportunity to be aggrieved go to waste.

Yeah I mean I glanced at a couple places and talked to a few Wiscy fans I know.. mostly it was like "that happened, coaches got a bit fired up, whatever", not like anyone is hung up on it.

He looked pissed most of the game actually. His team got outcoached and outplayed. Sanjay's dunk was just the flashpoint.

I think Gard is a lightweight and we will see Wisconsin drift down to the pack in the Big Ten. A Milquetoast. Seems like a nice guy and all that.

After the game, Joey Meyer said it best. Something like don't give it a second thought and have fun and celebrate.
