Does anyone around here know that fall camp

started yesterday? One would think there would be more chatter about it. At least one post?

Without access to practices or the release of any new information, there's not really that much to discuss. Best we have is a picture of the OL with Alviti behind it that might indicate the current first team (which was discussed), but that could be changed literally dozens of times between now and Stanford.

So you are saying that Alviti is going to open up fall camp as the #1? IMO, that would be great because I already have good feelings about Thorson as well.

I'm saying that's the one semi-useful piece of information that's come out. The first day of camp really means very little.

I found this picture. The caption read: Wideout Miles Shuler is sporting a new hairdo for camp.

Apparently Miles got a hair cut. I like it. Makes him look even faster. I don't like his beard though. I think if you have a beard and you should go all out and not shave the neck. Just let it all grow or shave it all off. But that's just one man's opinion.

He must have the same barber as Kyle Prater, who also got a dye job.

I am a fan of miles' beard, however I am concerned that the longer hairs on the bottom could result in wind resistance and negatively impact his acceleration off the line of scrimmage. Although, he will probably wear a helmet making this a non issue.

I miss the practice reports :(

Correct but this seems like what Fitz wants. Keep the Cats out of sight but it also keeps them out of mind, essentially leading to less interest in NU football. Why Fitz why!

Because this is the norm for BCS football programs restricting access/reporting only really affects maybe 25-30 people on these and other boards, all of whom are going to continue buying tickets and supporting the team anyway.

Maybe he should shave his legs. If he shaved his entire body, he could lose 5 grams which could mean the difference between a 20-yard kick return and a 99-yard kick return for a TD. Keep his nails trimmed close as well.

Not true. Go look at rivals sites at big football schools. Multiple articles a day on each day of camp, photos, and videos. There is some of this on the NU sports cite and Facebook page - for free.

Matthew Harris is protesting the Ezekiel Elliot rule they put in effect eliminating crop tops.

The exposure for press is typically very limited -- basically during warm-up's and maybe a couple periods of individual work. Regardless, holding fully open practices is definitely more exception than norm.

Understand the need to keep certain info in house, but why not produce internal reports/pics/videos that build excitement for the season. They can control what gets released and when. Others do this. Check out TSISB. Just buying tix from them for our game last year has resulted in a slew of emails, links and ticket offers. There may only be that 25 on here who are interested, but how do you make that 50 and then 100 and so on? Sorry, but the cloak of secrecy is over the top IMO.

I'm sure they will when there's actually something to report. At this point, the team has gone through what amounts to two or three glorified walk-through's without any pads. Not exactly anything interesting to report.

I have two college programs I follow. One is NU and the other is a traditional SEC football power. I get that the appetite for football among the two fanbases is different at the two schools, but the coverage between the two rivals sites is night and day - way less bang for the buck with the NU site. There are a few reasons for this. The appetite mentioned above and the number of subscribers allow the other site to have three full-time writers. Just as importantly, marketing is important to the coaching staff and they allow the rivals writers access to the program to create buzz. There are a lot of story lines to report on that are ignored on this site - how are summer workouts going, who is stepping up from a leadership standpoint, etc. A lot of it is BS, but many fans eat it up. And, although there may not be much going on this early in fall camp, the fact that this site doesn't give it any coverage at all and I have to go to a free site to get photos and videos doesn't speak well of this site's value proposition.

Each closed practice I have observed over the years has had about the same amount of fans as the non-closed practices previously. You are correct. And it seems as if the scaled down 'summer scrimmage' has about the same amount of fans as well. I see no evidence that close practices has affected anything. Actually, I think it is good for the program, due to the social media and protecting the privacy of players/coaches/program.

Exactly! Not only is this site and it's followers kept in the dark but so are Chicago area fans who can't read about Chicago's Big Ten Team in the daily papers.

I think NU marketing has been really slack over the decades, but it seems to me that the marketing has centered on things other than actual practice. Getting out the message of the Cat program is clearly seen on Billboards everywhere in the city of Chicago. Granted, out of towners don't see this. At the end of the day, our attendance at games has dropped but I believe that is due to a less than exciting team over the past two years and a conference that has hit the skids until the OSU championship.

Actually think that I have read that our attendance has been on the rise, even over the last couple of seasons and agree that Phillips has definitely increased marketing NU. Still feel that not letting the local media, including NU websites cover practice hurts, while trying to get local, average fans to take in a football game in Evanston.

It is not about the weight as much as it is about the wind resistance

Attendance dropped slightly from 2013 to 2014, but the overall trend has been distinctly upward during the Phillips era. Average attendance is up about 14k since 2009. I think Phillips has done a great job of marketing the program. I also think the effect of closing practices will be minimal.

Actually, Teddy Greenstein had a nice pre-camp story in the Trib Monday. Very little "news" comes out of day to day practices and you are competing for space with the red-hot Cubs, Bears pre-season and PGA this week so I doubt there would be much media coverage, if any, even if practices were completely open. The MOST IMPORTANT THING as to filling seats and creating interest is winning. The Bears have severely restricted camp shooting this year but the NFL sells itself. We need to beat Stanford (a very tall order). And speaking of Stanford, they have the same exposure problems being in a big city and even with all their recent success, they don't come close to selling out every game. But I doubt they have open practices either.

Just saying...my social media accounts are packe with reports/pics/vids about practice. Packed. I don't know if there's been anything in the Trib or Sun-Times, because, honestly...it's 2015 and those papers don't impact my life.

As an avid and very large cyclist, that is very true...except when the receiver has to run over the crown at mid-field. Then that added weight requires more energy to ascend the mid-field crown.

Who do you follow to get these. I don't use Twitter much and only started an account in 2012 to follow the NU beat writers and the program to try to get information on where to go for the bowl game.

Funny story, my dad got confused when we did this and booked the flight and hotel room to in the wrong city. That was the year we thought we'd get the Capital One bowl but Jim Delaney made a stand to get Nebraska in there and Michigan was the Outback Bowl's pick no matter what, so we fell to the Gator Bowl. When I told my Dad "Gator Bowl for sure" he booked Orlando for the flight and a place in Disney. Took me about an hour to make calls and got us out of the whole deal. Problem is during that hour, we took a hit on the flights getting more expensive.
