Eamoni Bates???

30 shots a game.

Home town kid coming back, some good Detroit-area transfers coming in -- could be interesting.

He had no high major opportunities left. No one was offering him. Might as well go home.

Naw, there has to be more to the story. He was on the portal for a while. Certainly long enough for some of the programs on his list to make room for him.

I lived in the area 3 years and used to go to EM games from time to time. The first 3 games I attended I came home with a “Eagle Nation” T-shirt. 2 of them were caught while sitting. That was the level of enthusiasm in the place.

Ypsilanti is not all bad, its trailer parks gave us Iggy Pop.

Athletic article seems to say that the adults in the room, his father and Coach Penny Hardaway, bear a lot of the responsibility for the kid’s slide.

Spent a weekend in Ypsilanti/Ann Arbor circa "The Ypsilanti Strangler"

Combes, I always appreciate your contributions here, but this post is way off base.

I know you see things through an Illini lense, but I would still count Louisville and Seton Hall as high majors. Our conference foe Michigan offered as well.

Bates was considered a big time basketball prospect only a year ago. In addition to being contrary to reporting, it’s pretty silly to think the kid didn’t have options other than Eastern Michigan. Sometimes players make decisions that they are most comfortable with, even if it flies in the face of traditional power conference logic.

I thought it was cool when Baldwin Jr went to UWM and I think it’s neat that Bates wants to spend his last year in college at Ypsi.

It's a good article, if a tad overwrought. I hope Elgin can take a step back and let Emoni be on a team that wasn't created expressly for him. Let him be coached, let him fail, let him adapt.

Long fall from the cover of SI to EMU!
…to running a red light, to gun charges, to a (preseason) suspension.

His lawyer says that the car was borrowed and the gun was not his. Also, you’re judged by the company you keep.
