It's '80s Night at Welsh-Ryan, so we're being treated to '80s music, '80s Nintendo-style scoreboard graphics and, for students, fluorescent T-shirt giveaways.

Hopefully we'll see a different Northwestern team tonight. Though watching Kentucky go down to Evansville shows you that upsets can happen to anyone. It made me feel a little better, anyway.

I'm looking for a lot more from Anthony Gaines and AJ Turner tonight. They were AWOL against Merrimack, scoring a total of eight points. Gaines, who didn't hit a field goal vs. the Warriors, has got to be much more involved, and Turner should get a lot more minutes. I think, in his case, Merrimack's guard-heavy lineup and diminutive size had a lot to do with his lack of playing time.

Providence's big two are Alpha Diallo, a 6-7 wing who averages 17 points and 12 rebounds, and the tragically named David Duke, a 6-5 point guard who averages 16 and 5.5. You might remember that NU recruited him for a while a couple years ago. (That's back when they were pursuing a couple kids with unfortunate names: David Duke and Drew Peterson.)

NU hits a bucket and brings three-quarter court pressure, then goes to a funky 2-2-1 zone, with Young down low. Interesting.

We look solid so far.

Providence playing very sloppy, bad news if they tighten up their ship a bit.

Our defense is starting out better. Providence is also just flat, but our defense early on is a little better.

Watching Kopp get hugged for a shot clock violation tells me I still don’t understand the personal space rules.

NU playing all zone so far. NU very active defensively, but it's hurting them on the glass. Providence has 6 offensive rebounds and have taken five more shots.

I hope you all can see, at least, that this isn't the worst team to ever grace the court. They will win some games this season and even some Big Ten games. Strange things can happen in early season, especially when we're still figuring things out, and it's no reason to hit the panic button.

When do you think Providence will try some zone? On our end we've played at least two different zones. Which leads me to ask, why didn't we try one of them in game 1?

Really enjoyed Kopp a) making a three with a dude in his face, and b) barking on his way back downcourt

what a great half!

All of our guys can shoot! Even Ryan Young has a better shot than both Pardon and Benson!

That was a good close to the half. Good passing, good looks, lots of fouls on shots.

Lots of room for improvement and also a much higher ceiling than was evident last game.
