Ha is the daily all of a sudden thinking maybe they should have fact checked before running that first story? Or just bored that they haven’t gotten as much national attention with conference realignment stealing the news cycle?

Cole Reynolds

@charcole27

Spoke to two former Northwestern football players about a pattern of hazing incidents in the mid-to-late 2000s. One of them said former head coach Pat Fitzgerald intervened and stopped the practice. More to come in the morning for

This is the type of work they should have done before printing the original story. Too little too late. They should be ashamed of themselves.

Yeah this is one of those things where millions upon millions of people saw the original story or heard some form of it and maybe thousands will see the latest piece.

Just doesn't do anything to mitigate the damage done here.

They're out with more details now. It doesn't say he ended all hazing:

Based on everything over the past few weeks; it sounds like MacPherson should have been fired not Fitz. His name pops up in a lot of these portrayals as a participant or witness.

Fitz probably deserved a 6 game suspension.

But we are where we are. Just a terrible mess all around.

So Fitz gets fired for not knowing that the humping incidents went “behind closed doors” of the locker room after he stopped it. Despite well documented open door policy, regular individual player meetings and apparently anonymized surveys giving players multiple avenues to report. No other assistants disciplined. He kept Cushing for a decade after that?? This is insane.

Keeping and promoting Cushing should have been enough to fire Fitz.

Where does the buck stop, exactly?
