The Wall Street Journal had an interesting article yesterday, giving the records for FBS coaches against teams ranked in the top 25 when they played them. Fitzgerald has a 7-16 record. His record is in marked contrast to everyones newest favorite, James Franklin, who is all of 1-10 at Vandy and PSU. Also of note are Tim Beckman (0-11), Sonny Dykes (0-10), and David Cutcliffe (9-26 and 3-14 at Duke). Heck, even Jerry Kill is only 2-13, and Gary Pinckel at Mizzou is 16-39. All have worse records against good competition than Pat.

The only coaches with winning records for their career are Saben, Fisher, Miles, Meyer, Bob Stoops (brother Mark is 0-8), Spurrier, David Shaw of Stanford, and Gary Patterson. Pretty select company.

What does this prove? Not much. But Pat does pretty well in comparison to some other name coaches.

As a fan, I have observed that Fitz is a much better coach against 'good teams'. Essentially, what that means is that his players don't quit and that he is a better coach when behind. That's my interpretation of his stateline. I get nervous when we are ahead, but I don't fear when we are behind. Ironically, Franklin is a horrible coach when he is behind, and this occurrence helped us out twice now. At any rate, imo, that is Fitz' greatest obstacle, i.e., coaching with a lead. Against Franklin, Fitz was behind in the 3rd quarter [Vanderbilt] and orchestrated a typical Fitz comeback from behind.

It proves it's tough to win against top 25 competition if you're not top 25.
