Star of the game will have to be shared by Matt Nicholson and KJ Windham. Thats seems unfair to KJ, but Nicholson was possibly playing his best game of the year before being jabbed in the eye by Iowa's Dix.
How that wasn't a flagrant foul - its beyond my comprehension. Matt could have suffered a life-altering injury there, but I don't think the refs even reviewed the play. If so, the double-standards in the Big Ten are disgusting. (If they did review the play, then they're just idiots).
Anyhow, Windham was phenomenal. Probably goes without saying. I feel confident when he is on the court.
Ty Berry and Nick Martinelli both helped secure the victory. Berry's box score was nice and clean. 6 rebounds, 4 assists, 2 steals, 0 turnovers.
Martinelli had an off night shooting, but contributed 3 offensive rebounds, 6 defensive rebounds and 2 assists against 2 turnovers.
Fitzmorris and Hunger both contributed off the bench - and held together over the last 17 minutes while Nicholson received medical attention.
Jordan Clayton had a zero assist, zero turnover performance, but he didn't hurt the team.
Justin Mullins seemed like he played pretty solid defense (as did Ciaravino) and went 4 of 6 from the floor, but played 31 minutes and only got 2.4 pts for his overall boxscore.
Ultimately Mullins did less to help the team win than other guys on the court with him. At least as measured by the stats.
And the Cats roll on, with two tough opponents ahead. The KenPoms of the world will tell you that NU has played back-to-back-to-back strong games.
And they might tell you that our defense is significantly improved lately...
And I would say - our offense is looking better. The ball moves and we're looking for open shots. More guys are involved. And it isn't so stagnant, although it was on occasion last night.
Oddly, I enjoy watching Wildcats 2.0 more than the predecessor.
