Here is the breakdown of the Wildcats first loss of the season Saturday night. I tossed the last 20 seconds, so the "final'" was 68-61.

Ciaravino204140+1+4.76+4.96
Mullins233728+9-0.71+1.09
Smith698+1-0.83-0.63

Nicholson203437-3-2.46-3.06
Leach233046-16-0.28-3.48
Windham284843+5-4.83-3.83
Berry202441-17-5.53-8.93

Other than the obvious "star of the game" going to Nick Martinelli, the only other guys who made a respectable showing are Angelo Ciaravino and Justin Mullins.
Mullins, notably was +9 in his 23 minutes. He missed all 3 of his shots, but had 5 rebounds, 3 assists, 2 steals and no turnovers. Classic "glue guy" numbers.
Of course, this means NU lost by 16 in the 17 minutes that Mullins wasn't playing. Dayton only scored 28 points in Mullins 23 minutes.
Angelo Ciaravino was impressive in his first real D1 battle. He finished with a raw +1. His fellow freshman KJ Windham finished with a raw +5. But Ciaravino was 5 of 7 from the floor, with Windham going 4 of 11..

Ty Berry did not play well. Nor did Jalen Leach. The team struggled when they were on the court. I suspect it had more to do with Dayton's personnel than Berry and Leach. Leach, in particular, could not match the Dayton quickness. Windham, the true freshman, showed glimpses of being a star... quicker than anybody else for NU, he had to try to get the offense going... its a lot to ask at this point, but by Dec 1, Windham may have Leach's spot in the starting lineup - or be playing more minutes. Windham played the last 9 minutes. NU led 51-41 with about 10 minutes to go and got outscored 25-8 into the closing minute.

Ciaravino, a 6'6" wing, was a bad matchup for Dayton who played 3 guards most of the game. One of those little Dayton guys had to guard the NU freshman and he bullied them. That alone is very promising.

One noteworthy tidbit was that when Mullins and Windham were on the court together, NU outscored Dayton 29-13 in about 15.5 minutes. In fact, Mullins, Ciaravino and Windham were all on the court together for a 12-0 run midway thru the first half. When both Berry and Leach were sitting on the bench, NU outscored Dayton 26-6 over 10.5 minutes. When Berry or Leach was on the court we got beaten down 65-40. I don't want to start making proclamations, since I do think Dayton was a problem for our backcourt, but thats rather remarkable.

Like Matt Nicholson, I'm feeling some rust with this, so if I messed up, please let me know.

You had me at "hello." Love these commentaries. It is NU basketball porn, without the guilt.

Re the observation "when Mullins and Windham were on the court together, NU outscored Dayton 29-13 in about 15.5 minutes. In fact, Mullins, Ciaravino and Windham were all on the court together for a 12-0 run midway thru the first half." I think this says a lot about:
1) the unexpected skillfulness of Jello and KJ as first years
2) the matchup issues posed by the 6'6" Jello and Mullins, who both possess the length and athleticism to be a real problem for teams that go small.

I was not able to see the game, but if Leach is not up for the speed of the better teams, KJ should be, and will soon enough get the starting job.

You can give up an hour and ten minutes of your life and watch the whole game on YouTube!

There is no doubt that Mullins and Ciaravino are very athletic.
Its good to have them both in case Barnhizer has one of those (injury-riddled) years.

As it is, we have 17 days and 4 games we should win before we go to Tempe and face Butler and then either UNLV or Mississippi State the next day.

Berry and Leach ought to have no trouble putting up numbers in Evanston until then, but thats not going to prove very much... Leach gets his shot at redemption in Tempe.

I am sitting at Hinkle for the 2nd time this year. Butler is far from impressive. They should be better, they have experienced players. But, for now, looks solidly like a bottom 1/3 of the Big East.
