Game Thread for NU vs. Penn State

When announcers said, "Ryan Young sits down but he'll be back, he's the one keeping Northwestern in the game" I though, you're wrong, he'll never see the floor again. And sure enough, he didn't! Thanks CCC!
Not like PSU had a powerful interior force.

Staying in the zone was a great move too! Let them hit about 9 3's first though.

Avoiding the opening day of the B1G Tourney once out of 9 years (or however long it's been) ought to be enough to cost someone their job. Just sayin' that's an easy metric.

Well that sure sucked. Why the hell do you have a guy in there in Beran who is obviously having a horrible night and sit Young for the last 7 minutes of the game.Must be a union rule you can’t play Young and Nance at the same time.I am not into the fire Collins camp every time we lose but somewhere along the line we have to start winning.Enough of this crap.Really bummed out by this game.If Collins comes back next year which he probably will I want to see wins.No more 35 min games. No more we played hard.Wins are all that matters and the administration has to realize that otherwise what is the use in watching.

Ty Berry was having a decent game too. Get him more shots instead of just allowing Audige to shoot you to a loss.

And if I see Beran short arm one more close in bunny because he’s scared to go up hard I’m going to puke

This team sooo underperforms and underachieves based on its talent, which it has. I pin this sucky season squarely on Collins.
The team has exactly two B1G Ten starters. The rest are role players. Another two are good on D but kill us on O. Our best bench player helps on O, and hurts us bad on D. It would take John Wooden to put this team in the conference championship hunt,

Nobody expects us to be big 10 champs, but there is more than enough talent on this team to be .500 in league this year.

The coach has zero clue for situational in game changes.

Yet some folks believe he needs more time....

Please someone ask Collins assuming he takes any questions why young played only 14 mins. 4/5 for 8 pts and 6 rebounds. Plus he was a tough matchup for harrar

Instead we get Audige 3/15 and Beran 0/5

It’s just a complete non feel for game situations
I’m done. Totally done with him. The team isn’t losing. He is. His usage is the worst.

Some of our players do stupid things but part of that is because there are zero repercussions especially if you are one of his “favorites”. Good coaches teach their players to play smarter.

I have to agree with this to a large extent. Collins has the depth to sit some guys who don’t produce. He needs to realize he can be a coach, not a friend. The one problem with this is that they all have problems. Even Young continues to bring the ball down to dribble when he should just go right back to the hoop. He should not be doing that after 3+ years; it’s basic big man stuff. We know others have much bigger problems. It’s a fine line to give guys confidence and give them tough love, especially when his talent is not average in the league, but he needs the latter much more it seems.

The first thing you have to recognize for your team is who has the hot hand in the game.It sure wasn’t Beran,so why do you keep him in the game?Keep Young in the game and let Nance take Beran’s spot.Would we have won who knows but we would have had a much better chance. And of course down by 4 with 37 secs left in the game who do we have fire up a 3 well naturally the guy who has already missed 12 shots, and we still could have worked for a good shot instead of chucking up a quick 3.I just don’t get the thinking and decision making of our staff or players. And that last 3 pt shot by us was after a timeout so you have to think that play was by design.

I’ve been waiting all season to see him take Audige out after a wild non-strategic shot, and use that as a teaching opportunity. I’m still waiting.

Gee, didn't realize that Collins was missing all of those shots, losing the ball off of dribbles and letting the other teams guys get easily to the basket.

He kept the one offensive player we had that was able to rebound and score at the hoop on the bench the last 10 minutes. You don’t see that? Not sure how it’s even debatable as it’s an abortion of coaching what he did last night.

All you have to do is see Young played 13 minutes, had 8 points, 6 boards (on a night we got DECIMATED on the boards), 3 assists, and 1 turnover. It's beyond idiotic.

What was telling to me was when I looked at the box score to see how Harrar and Young matched up, it was apparent that PSU planned to keep Harrar away from Young, gambling that CC would stick to his tendencies of barely giving Young minutes which would allow Harrar to still play a lot.

1st half:
Young enters at 16:08, Harrar exits at 15:04 after getting 3 boards and shooting 0-1
Young exits at 12:15, Harrar enters at 12:15
Young enters at 4:38, Harrar exits at 4:11 after picking up his 1st foul
Harrar enters at 2:30, Young exits at 1:53
Young enters at 1:12 and exits at 0:51, then enters at 0:32 and exits at 0:05.

2nd half:
Young enters at 15:51, Harrar exits at 11:42, no shots, no rebounds for Harrar, 4 points, 1 board, 1 assist, 1 turnover for Young
Young exits at 9:24 and does not re-enter. Harrar re-enters at 9:24 and has 2 points, 7 boards and 1 block the rest of the way

Harrar: 0-1, 0 points, 3 boards, 1 foul against Young in 7 minutes, 4-5, 11 points, 17 boards, 1 block against Nance in 24 minutes.

Shrewsbury outcoached Collins in this area here.

Thanks for looking into that. I was watching the game last night and it was clear that Young was dominating Harrar and was very confident against him, while Harrar was killing Pete Nance in the paint.
I was going to look into it, and thankfully you beat me to it. Much appreciated.

Did Young score all his point on Harrar? I know he was outrebounding him.

The coach determines who plays.

If I'm coaching park district girls soccer and I keep putting my lesser players on the field, its not really their fault if we lose.
Of course, when the parents get in my face about it, I could always say "Your kids suck."

Get it? It is on the coach to enable his team to maximize the results.

Took Collins 6 minutes to get his best player in the game.

Also thanks to Uber who gave me two extras so I’ve got the entire family here tonight.
