Game Thread: Northwestern vs. UCLA

Matt with the goal tending and cats are falling behind. Coach got a time out, let’s see what magic he sets up.

UCLA is the more athletic and talented team, as evidenced by the disparity in the number of offensive rebounds. Perhaps the Cats can catch fire and get back in this one, but it seems unlikely.

The threes are no longer falling for us. Need to get those in to have much of a chance.

And some defensive boards would be good.

I liked going to mart or a three. Tough miss and no call there but I’m not sure it deserved a foul. KJ did make a play on the ball. That is bs

This team has so much heart. I am so tired of the refs f*cking them at the end of games. It has become surreal.

We just let them run too long there to go up by double digits. Bummer.

Proud of the Cats. They battled.

Nick got knocked over, no call. That’s at least a four point swing at the most crucial moments of the game.

Talk about cheated.

Part of why I want Martinelli to win the scoring title is that maybe *next* year he'll get the calls on plays like those. Certainly not this year.

Unfortunately getting screwed by refs with crucial plays at the end of games is nothing new for an NU fan.
I never want to be the guy who insists the refs are biased, but man, I’m so tired of not getting calls. After getting screwed so many times, you can’t help wonder if the refs really do see us as jNW.

Bad ref miss on Mart. KJ foul probably didn't really matter what kind once the guy got out front.

Foul or no foul, I didn't like that last play. There were 12 seconds left on the clock. Even if Nick had gotten the call and made both FTs, it would have been a tie game with UCLA getting the last shot to win.

Should have slowed it down a bit and given Berry the chance to hit a three to win.

Here we go…

I’m not sure if it’s bias by the refs… the quality of refs in the conference is just really poor. It’s been the story of our season.
I want to believe there is no bias. It's a lot easier to believe the refs just suck.

I loved Bardo's analysis of the ball out of bounds review. Should be Northwestern's ball because the defender hit the ball handler's hand and not the ball itself. So a missed foul call by the refs should mean that UCLA touched the ball last. Alas, the refs did not agree.

I’m with you. I’m pretty passionate about how much people complaining about refereeing is just killing sports. After SO MANY games in every sport, the postgame discussion is about how bad the refs were and nitpicking calls. It annoys me to no end. I believe in the long run, these things typically even out.

BUT, we have absolutely been on the wrong side of it this year. Several calls this year that were game changing have gone against us. Sometimes that’s just how it goes, but man, it’s really frustrating. This team, despite all the injuries could easily have 2-4 more wins at this point if bad calls weren’t made at the wrong time. That’s a tough reality.

I get the frustration, but both teams were whistled for 16 fouls. It was a hell of a comeback in a game that NU was seemingly out of with two minutes left. UCLA had twice as many blocks and 12 more rebounds than NU did. That was the difference in the game, not a missed foul call with 12 seconds left.
