Game Thread: Northwestern vs. Washington

Oddly it was our best player who lost his composure down the stretch. An inexcusable turnover and then a heave against a triple team with plenty of time left on the shot clock and a teammate wide open on the left wing.
Martinelli is not a good passer. He doesn't really look to pass. Or he just thinks he shouldn't. Its his one real weakness.

That is their go to. Lazy officiating they just call a jump ball because they are lazy and unskilled. Many times the other team barely touches the ball. Only time that I’ve ever watched basketball and know all the officials names. These guys are horrible.

The twitter guy was right again. Can’t believe we’re burning his shirt.
What choice do we have? Need someone that can handle the ball. Clayton looked like he was ready to play and had a pretty nice game. Was only 2-7 from the field but that is to be expected. Rest of his game was pretty solid with 0 turnovers and 5 assists and he hit his FTs. More ready to play than KJ

I’d rather see KJ and Angelo play 30 minutes a game and just see what happens than put clayton in there. If I’m one of the freshman, is this taken as a sign of disrespect? Do you consider transferring next year?

Clayton played better than KJ.
Not to me he didn't.
I will have to look at the numbers.
I do think it was crazy to use Blake Smith against USC.
And I don't have any idea why Clayton played tonight.
That whole situation is crazy.

Also Blake Smith didn't play tonight - what are we doing?

Have no idea. Is Chris Collins ok? I’m a huge fan, I’ve never been so confused (and pissed) about a coaching move. The only benefit of injuries to top guys is to see what you have with the new guys. A waste of valaubale playing time.

Seriously? Transfer? Why because the Coaches can actually see they aren’t ready to play and instead play other options. How about you do something to EARN playing time? How many games do they have to do very little out there before they should see the bench?

KJ inured or sick? Only way this makes any sense.
KJ is a Frosh and still working his way into things, If Clayton had not tried for a RS, he would have had minutes before KJ. He is stronger and more ready to play. That said he probably was going for the RS because we got Leach and he would keep the year of eligibility because he would have gotten all of 3-5 minutes per game. The good news is he was not sitting on his hands but working to develop and be ready for next year. He will get plenty of minutes in the last 8 games and probably more than the total time he would have gotten if he had not tried to RS and Leach had not been hurt

They play with a short leash. Give them some playing time. The season is over. Hate to say that but it is over. I’m not one to get too high or too low after a game, but I don’t know if they are going to win another game. Figure out what you have for next year. Clayton should not be part of the future.

I wanna see KJ and Angelo get out there and play great, or struggle and get better. Damn I’m salty.

We did try Luke Hunger at the 4, with Fitzmorris. That shocked me. I mean, why not, I liked it, I just never thought we'd do it.

Mullins played well.

Clayton played 26 minutes. My mind is boggled.

Clayton played better than KJ. Here is your numbers:

Clayton 26 minutes
7 Points
5 Assists
1 Rebound
1 Steal
0 turnovers

KJ 14 minutes
0 Points
2 Assists
0 Rebounds
1 Steal
2 Turnovers

So double them for minutes if you would like, but there is no way he played better than Clayton no matter how you contort the numbers.

Why not? Clayton is only a sophomore. I had written him off as a likely transfer, but he's obviously been working hard in practice and in the weight room. He looked way stronger and more composed playing extended minutes in a very difficult situation tonight than he did at any point last season.

I’m more confused as to why Clayton hasn’t played prior to today. He’s not a great player, but you can see he deserves some minutes here and there.

I’ll admit it’s weird that he played today after not playing all year. While not confirmed, it felt quite clear that he was going to transfer and they had agreed to redshirt him. But now, im not sure what’s up. Yes, we’re shorthanded, but still odd that he burned his shirt on February 8th.

That said, he doesn’t look lost out there. He’s not a great shooter, but he’s good enough to be a Big 10 reserve in my eyes.

Tough loss to a bad team. But we’re so undermanned it’s hard to expect more. They battled, but hard to replace 35+ points, especially in a late night west coast road game.

Good effort. Just not enough in the tank late.
Agree, losing Barney and Leach really ended any hopes of making the B1G tournament. To make it worse, we couldn't overcome the terrible referees. Before Collins got kicked out, Martinelli was being held and hacked egregiously without a call. The TV announcers were amazed there were no calls. Collins couldn't take it anymore and took it on himself to address the issue. So yeah, it cost us four points, but at that rate of reffing, we would've lost by 15.

Ciaravino and Windham both played decently tonight. I think you aren't watching them.

Exactly. Plus his D was so much better.

Clayton was buried on the bench. With Leach playing 30+ minutes, we didn't need Clayton. Take away Leach, and now we don't have a point guard. KJ is a combo guard, and he wasn't going to get 30 minutes.

Don’t go there yet. Winning a few more gets them into the BTT.

Clayton still has several years of eligibility as well. It is not disrespect. But reality is that they are Frosh and are not ready for a whole lot more minutes than they were already getting. Clayton is stronger and more physically and mentally mature and more ready to play than the frosh at this point, Reality is that there are only so many minutes to go around and the only reason that they were getting the minutes that they were is that Clayton was trying for a RS and was not there to suck up the available minutes.

Plus Barnhizer. Take out Leach and Barnhizer and there’s little ball handling on this team.

I will run my numbers and let you know.
Clayton took 7 shots and made 2. My impression was that he had no clue on defense.
That may be wrong.
One of KJ's turnovers was a good pass to Fitzmorris who stopped.
Our big rally was with Windham at point guard.
We'll see.

I said this on the Rock last week BEFORE Leach went down. I watched Clayton in warm ups this year, and he hit threes better than any player on our roster not named Berry. Whether that translates to games, I don’t know.

Why on earth are you so confident Clayton can’t be part of the future? I am not saying he can, I don’t know for sure and today he isn’t worse than the Freshman.

Fair enough. It's not looking good, but crazier things have happened.
I want to be optimistic but felt we win tonight and we're definitely in, lose and its not looking good at all. I don't see many (any?) wins on our remaining schedule whereas before Brooks and Jalen went out, this was the part where we make our move.

I think people really struggle with the concept that players usually aren’t great their first year.

Clayton is basically one of those new guys at this point. I think he has 3 years of eligibility and he is using one for the rest of this year. And you gotta figure that it was Clayton's choice to drop the RS for this to happen. Based on what we saw tonight, he looks like he is ready to play and actually looks ready to be the #1 PG for next year and the rest of this year will help get him ready for that. KJ and Jello will get their shots

CCC made a statement to that effect of Clayton volunteering to drop his redshirt in the WGN pregame interview.

Guru claimed Clayton was “dominating in practice.” Couple that with two ball handling options, he suddenly has a lane to play. Good on him!

I don’t see this as disrespect for KJ. It’s a meritocracy.

He’s the deal With that PWB, at our last few homes I have almost exclusively focused on the Frosh when they were in there. I said for a month that they are killing us. The reason I watched that closely was because you and a few others were so adamant that they were playing well and had to see more action. I thought I might have a bias against Frosh. After doing this, I am more convinced than ever that they hit that wall a month ago and have played poorly. Bad on defense and non-existent on offense. I stick by that opinion and any weird blame for dropped passes or missed shots that would have been assists isn’t going to convince me otherwise.

Again, they will be FINE players in time.

Yep, and I think that should be obvious to anyone that follows the team closely. CCC and his staff didn’t force Clayton to drop his RS. He wanted to help and we needed the minutes.
And that means he loves the program and is not likely to transfer anywhere

These guys are brothers and this season is a battle. Clayton has been really into the games on the bench.

They have 2 days out west to figure out schemes with the guys they have. They had to hatch this plan after the SC game.

This season is not over. Beat Oregon, come home and beat Nebraska. Crazier things have happened.

Not to make you all embarrassed but tonight is the 2nd time this year I stay up past midnight.

Yeah, I am that much of a bad boy.
Getting old is hard
Another loss. Just don't have the mental toughness they had with Boo.
Right now, they don't have the personnel We have to replace over half of our scoring, a lot of rebounding etc as well
