This is the first Fourth of July in recent years that I have actually been here in Alaska to enjoy it. Two of the last three years I was aboard a ship at sea in the Pacific Ocean and it just was't the same even though the Captain provided a red white and blue frosted cake for us Yankees.

Took advantage of the opportunity to hoist the flag here at home and spent the day enjoying our heat wave of temps approaching 80 degrees F by harvesting dinner from the garden and painting the entry way and underside of the front deck.

Hope all are enjoying this Fourth of July.

Of course, with daylight extending well into the night, the one thing we don't get here in Alaska on the Fourth of July are the spectacular fireworks that those in the lower 48 and Hawaii enjoy. For that last week's venture to "The Happiest Place on Earth" will have to suffice.

I was surprised to learn that Disney with its daily fireworks displays at multiple parks is one of, if not the major, users of fireworks in the world.
