Hunter transferring back to Clemson

Wow, good luck Hunter. Saw this on ESPN:

From 2018 through 2021, Johnson appeared in 10 games at Northwestern, including eight starts. He won just two of those starts, completing 48% of his throws with eight touchdowns and eight interceptions.

Johnson said he was initially planning to apply to Clemson's MBA program and had approached Swinney about serving as a graduate assistant in 2022. Swinney instead asked if he'd be open to playing another season.

I really want Dabo to be a jerk so I can dislike him, then he goes and does stuff like this. Class move.

Yeah, I think it is really a class move and I think that most people around here really hope things work out for Hunter. He seems to be a really good guy who tried his best but it didn’t work out. Also the folks at Clemson were very supportive of his family’s charity

Agree FA. He could have been a Tate Martell and transferred at the end of 19 or 20. He stayed and gave it his shot.

As fans, we see these young men come and go, and we forget what it is like for a person to be an intense competitor, yet fail. Imagine a guy with Hunter's credentials playing the equivalent of half a season over 4 years. That had to suck.

I understand why someone like Martell transfers multiple times, but I don’t *really* understand. It’s sad in its way that life is so much about football that, if not starting, it’s time to leave. Martell could have competed with Stroud this season, multiple years in the system, etc. — instead, he’s moved to Miami and then UNLV, with fewer passing yards than in his first season in Columbus.

And, he’s not had any of the fun building and growing and competing with ‘his guys’ over those four years. (Of course, he’s kind of into himself, it seems.)

As for Johnson, there’s the human part of me that wants to see him arrive in Clemson, earn some playing time, light up the world, win a National championship, and make an nfl roster. But the Wildcat fan wants him to earn the opening day start and *also* fail at Clemson (it’s the QB, not the system!) More likely, I assume he doesn’t see the field.

Thanks to HuJo for giving his all as a Wildcat. May we remember him only for his long distance strikes to Steph and Kirtz, and for nothing else.

That’s awesome that Dabo is welcoming him back to compete for another year. Hope he is able to get on the field.

I read about Alabama football when Dabo was there and he came across as definitely a coach I would want my kids to play for. Of course that could be a wrong impression but this is not the first time he has done really good things like this to players in need of special assistance and other charity work.

Most likely to end up on the bench again but I admire his determination to rewrite history. Good luck to him.

Happy for Hunter, bear no ill will and wish him well. However, this of all things is making news - got alerts from The Athletic, ESPN, etc. If I'm a casual CFB fan I notice that both the best and the worst of Northwestern football players are leaving a program that once had almost no one leave.

It's the off-season and I do realize that there's only so much Fitz & Co. can do before they can get back on the field and show improvement; just hate the media game between now and August.

He didn't leave our program. From the article:

“I initially reached out to Coach Swinney to honestly see if he had any GA spots,” Johnson told 247Sports. “My girlfriend we went to Clemson together and we been looking at going back down South and reached out to him about GAing because I wanted to get my MBA. I reached out to him and he asked if I had my sixth year because of Covid and I told him I still did. It wasn’t really my intention initially of calling him. It was pretty exciting and I took a day or so to think over things and it felt like it was a great situation for me and her all around and just being able to go finish my sixth year and play at a place I’ve grown to love over the years and be part of the room. That’s what he told me, he wants to have somebody in the room who’s older who’s had some experience in college football and the fact I already been there and been in the system and know the system helps even more. He thought it would be a really really cool situation.”

This "makes news" because The Athletic (which I love), ESPN, etc. are in the business of publicizing just about everything to get readers and clicks.

I do agree with you about ESPN/Athletic et al and their "news for the sake of push notifications" strategy, but let's be clear: Hunter isn't getting his MBA at Northwestern (because why would anyone want to do that??)...he's going back to Clemson for that, where he will also be a football player.

If we were Alabama or Oklahoma, or we were running a Mike Leach-esque offense, I think the average know-nothing CFB fan would naturally assume this was all on the player himself. The fact that 3-9 Northwestern lost a former "five star" QB - SPECIFICALLY to the place from where he originally transferred - and is still "good enough" in Dabo's book to be in his QB lineup - it's just a headline that doesn't reflect favorably on NU at the moment. Would be a different story if we were 6-6, or if he were transferring to Eastern Michigan, or hadn't just lost a high-profile player, and so on...but hopefully brighter days are ahead.

The big loss was and is Joseph. He has his name on the stadium, surely would have had the same role again, and despite holes in his game, is a probable NFL camp player. He is a captain and former AA that left for a name program, where I presume he will get a ton of playing time. The other losses are really no worse than any other program, and we've brought in enough to balance the losses or more, with possibly more to follow.

Hunter had already walked on senior day and was not part of our 2022 plans, so this not negative news, even if it is presented and perceived as same.
