In the sense that the booster clubs at certain schools have finally gotten their way, yes. I don't have a problem with compensating athletes that help produce great revenue for a school's athletic programs. There seem to be no limits, however.

Athletes don’t produce great revenue, major conferences generate revenue via TV contracts. Like all other professional sports, the question becomes how big a piece of the pie do the athletes receive. Currently, they have limited leverage other than threatening to take their skills elsewhere.

This NIL and portal stuff reminds me of that part in the book about coach Hinkle where he was lamenting the future destruction of college sports that would ensue when the transition to athletic scholarships was complete. How he wouldn't be able to compete against the big national programs when he lost the edge he currently held as his boosters provided players with food, lodging, transportation, employment, and cash to encourage their attendance at Butler.

Yes. The athletes are the ones with the unique skills.

But the conferences are the ones with most of the bargaining power. The scales are certainly shifting. Hard to say exactly where they will rebalance.

However, rumors are circulating that they are aggressively reaching out to QB’s from other schools with very lucrative offers. The TCU QB reportedly turned down a $1M more than what TCU is paying him. They also have been linked to the Illini QB. I think Angelli formerly with ND might fit, but they are apparently aiming higher by trying to steal a proven starter.

Makes sense if you are Tennessee. The chaos around this will eventually lead to some changes. There has to be some type of rules with NIL where you can’t just “hold out” after agreeing to a deal.

I no longer see how this doesn’t end with collective bargaining. I used to think that was possible, but not the most likely, but with the House settlement the future is so close to employment in law that I don’t see how a court or the NLRB doesn’t force it at some point. Maybe not, but it seems like it’s rushing there.

Setting that aside, more and more collectives and schools are starting to create poison pills for guys reneging on deals, like we saw with the Wisconsin player. A college basketball coach recent spoke anonymously about this.
