Here are some of my impressions on what I saw during today's open spring practice. Take it all with a grain of salt -- this is one of 15 practices.
- The starting OL, from left to right, was Tiernan, Ezomo, Carsello, Beerntsen, McGuire. Now, the guys who were out today included Bailey and Gray, two guys will likely be the starters at center and right tackle, respectively.
- The top three WRs were Covey, Wilde and Ricky A. Petrucci and Welcing got the most reps at tight end.
- The starting DL was Kilbane, Gant, Bastone, Saka (Hubbard, Campbell were out). The LBs were Uihlein and Brus (not Karlaftis). The starting CBs were Fussell and Davis II, and the S were Walters and Fitzgerald.
- I was impressed by early enrollee QB Marcus Romain. We knew he was a good runner -- he has the lower half of a RB more than a QB. But he throws a really nice ball, and was able to fit it into some tight windows. He had a dart to Crane (I didn't even know who he was) in traffic that was particularly sharp. Big upside with this guy.
- Stone looked as advertised. He has what I'll call "flickability." He'll be rolling toward the sideline, and he has the ability to pull the ball back quickly and flick it about 25 yards in the air to hit someone down the field that you didn't even see.
- Early enrollee DE Caden O'Rourke (the name on his jersey said O'Rouke) was impressive. He was "terrorizing" (@mshelton33) transfer OL Lewis in one-on-ones. He's got a very quick get-off and seemed to be faster than just about anyone out there.
- They ran some one-on-ones OL vs. DL, which were entertaining. Bastone just overpowered Carsello and pushed him into the QB. But Ezomo did a good job against Bastone, dropping his anchor and stopping his bull rush. Ezomo is going to be a very good OL.
- Beerntsen looks smaller than a lot of the guys but he looked good in drills. He's short, but he also doesn't have the gut that a lot of others do. Lewis is a huge man, but he's got a lot of flab, too. Speaking of large humans, 2025 signee Michael O'Connell was there. He is all of 6-7 and looks very well put together for a high school kid.
Those are just some quick strokes. I welcome any questions. A lot of you guys were there -- please add any comments you have.
