Been reading about Big Ten/SEC bully moves around the college football playoff...and about the possibility of the Big 2 just breaking off altogether...reading about all conferences (including us) taking meetings to discuss private equity investment...meanwhile I don't recognize half our coaches or players anymore because turnover is now happening nonstop, by design - all while the cost of being a fan skyrockets while my interest drops to an all-time low. I'm not more excited to watch Iowa and Wisconsin rotate off our schedules to make room for Rutgers and Oregon.
My fanaticism for college football dies a little with each passing day. Am I alone? I don't think this is in any way Northwestern-specific (beyond the fact that we had coaching stability for so many years and low player-turnover) so much as it is the sport of college football navigating change as badly as any entity I've ever seen. Conflict on every level with tangible leadership only coming at the faction level, advocating for localized self-interests. It just all feels gross.
