Jeremiah Tilmon requests release of LOI from Illinois

In other Illinois news, Underwood hired an assistant who has scumbag written all over him. Orlando Antigua is a former Calapari assistant who was fired from his head coaching gig at South Florida because the program was under investigation for academic fraud. At one point last year, one of the South Florida assistants was not allowed to go out on recruiting trips. The assistant? Antigua's brother.

So Illinois is all in. They found Jimmy Collins 2.0.

I love the soap opera of the Illini. All the supposed history. All the supposed foundational strength. Yet, so much obvious desperation.
As one of the Chicago papers noted this AM, looks like Illinois is putting winning at all costs over ethics. Not a good start to the Underwood era.

Is he talking about BIG rules that might be different from NCAA rules? And if he gets released from his LOI is that really transferring or is it starting new?

I'm pretty sure there are no such restrictions within the conference. Should Clifton Moore decide not to attend IU after meeting with Miller this weekend, IU should grant the release. Then, if he joins NU, they would need to petition to the NCAA to waive the sit out year. I understand this is common in the event of coaching changes and should not prevent Clifton from playing this season.

When Albrecht transferred from Michigan to Purdue as a grad transfer, he had to get Michigan permission specifically to go within the conference. I don't know if this applies to incoming freshmen, though.

"Michigan coach John Beilein had reportedly originally intended to block Albrecht from transferring to a Big Ten rival, but lifted all transfer restrictions in April, allowing Albrecht to enroll at Purdue."

Strange business. No restrictions for the coaches to up and go wherever, whenever, and they're paid. Meanwhile the players are locked in? Something smells here...

This has been my gripe for years. There is a way to avoid this mess if you are a high-level recruit -- just don't sign an NLI. You can sign a financial aid agreement instead, which binds the school to you, but places no restrictions on you if the coach leaves, the school gets put on probation or you just plain change your mind between November and April.

I do not think that this is the case. NLI releases are different from transfers and typically don't allow schools to limit potential destinations nor does it require sitting out a year.

I think Smith is sort of the definition of a "combo" guard. He can handle, shoot, dunk, all that stuff.
But the position they were saying he would occupy here were all wing positions spelling Law and Lindsey while at other schools looking at openings for PG.

What "they" are you referring to? The coaches said this to Smith?
