Just thinking out loud in reference to all the issues being dealt with concerning the Portal, NIL and Roster limits. For those of you that remember all college programs had freshman teams. What if they went back to that system with a few changes:
1. Bring in your scholarship and PWO’s. At the coaches discretion and if they feel they warrant playing their first year move them to the varsity roster. The remaining players get a chance to participate and develop in game situations and the coaches could observe who may have a chance to make the roster prior to Spring practice starting.The ones that don’t have the necessary skills either get cut leave on their own or our placed on a non roster status.
If coaches see a need to move a freshman to the main roster based on a need they have that flexibility throughout the season.
2. Any player coming in under the NIL program could play on the freshman squad or on the varsity roster based on the coaches decision. All NIL players would need to stay a minimum of two years.
3. The roster discussion would be void since the incoming scholarship and/or PWO’s would not be counted against a roster limit thus reaching the desired numbers.
4. Nothing would change with the Portal other than I would suggest only two moves over a 5 year period.
