Cannot fault the effort. Tap was outstanding. Joey had flashes of brilliance in his return to Blacksburg. Very happy for him.

This was the 14th best team in the ACC though. Cats are just not very good this year. Tech were more athletic, particularly Allen who was great.

>Cats are just not very good this year.

It's a little early to be throwing that out there. We're not elite, but we're way better than we've been in the past few years. And our talent has way more potential that any roster we've had in a while. I'd say right now we're playing like an above average team, with a whole season to improve. Let's table this this assessment until mid-January.

Bottom line, we won on the road in the ACC with a cold second half from our best player and no clear third option. Bad teams don't do that.

You say some really stupid things sometimes.

Also, wouldn't be surprised if Tech surprises this year in the ACC. They're not talentless...their outside shooting will make or break them...

I agree. They're a good team with good athleticism down low. Olah had trouble doing anything on offense (besides a 3-point banker) and rebounding against their quick frontcourt. Olah did get a number of blocks, though. I'm happy we were able to pull this out with Lumpkin doing the heavy lifting. Great defense at the end of OT!

This was a game where we should have used JVZ more. I guess we did but he got into foul trouble quickly and we had to go with Olah. He was the better option (more athletic and able to rebound with their bigs) at center for this game, and that was apparent when he came back into the game with four fouls. A quick dunk, a block, and a save.

Seth Allen was on fire for most of the night until Lumpkin sealed the deal. Seth Allen was a two-year player from Maryland and beat NU in Evanston when Alex Len was on the team, so this team is more athletic than last year's team which finished 14th.

McIntosh took over the game in OT with big shots with Tre running on fumes. NU lost this game at home to Georgia Tech last season. Yes, the team has flaws, but so does everyone else. It plays with toughness and more grit than NU teams in the past. The depth that NU helps a lot when some players are having off nights. NU won on the road with limited production from Lindsey and Falzon, but other players stepped up in Lumpkin and Taphorn. Notice how NU limited VT's leading scorer Leday to one point. That is huge!

This is the most athletic NU team I have seen, but Tech was more athletic and they are not a good ACC team. NU has had to go to OT in 2 games against not very good competition, and struggled to beat a Fairfield team that gave up 101 points to Iona College tonight. Sorry to be Debbie downer, but I don't see a big jump this year from the last couple of seasons. Maybe the loss of Vic Law is hurting the rotation more than I thought it would.

I'm surprised we didn't see JVZ in overtime, heck at least for the jump ball. Olah was definitely struggling, though he did get a good block late in OT. Maybe Collins was worried about JVZ shooting FTs, but he had some nice possessions on the pick and roll late, we get up 6, and Collins takes him out with 3 mins left.

I was also surprised how much Collins used Taphorn on defense late in the regulation, and even some in OT. I would have thought he went defense for offense and rotated Taphorn and Skelly.

Anyways, great game for Lumpkin, as mentioned above, that 3 was huge in OT, we had lost the momentum and if he misses that I could see us crumbling and losing.

Guys like Falzon and Lindsey have to get going for us this year. They have been too inconsistent so far. Tap did a nice job providing scoring tonight to offset their off nights.

Tap was great tonight. Falzon showed more toughness than I've seen in previous games, particularly on the jump ball after he pulled down a defensive rebound. Lindsey is foul prone........

Lumpkins 3 found its way in... needed it... road win is good - plus nice recovery after losing the momentum. This is an average team but with potential. Losing Law was huge but he will have 3 years. Tre came back nicely from a medical red shirt. Program still a step better with a nice recruiting class coming in.

We won't win many games with Tre going 1-9 from three point range. That said, we found a way to do it tonight on the road against an ACC team. You take the wins when you can...and winning close games (especially ones in OT) gives me a little confidence that there's a budding "winning mentality" among the group. Hopefully both BMac and Tre won't need to log in 35+ minutes in the next couple games...

Agree, this is like football. I don't care how we win, as long as we go 1-0 each game.
Not sure I agree we're less athletic. Regardless, it's a team game, not an individual. Witness Wilt Chamberlain scoring as much as 100 points yet his team never won the big games.

I really like Falzon's game. All the announcers say he can't bang but every game he gets a super tough rebound.

Off night for Lindsey but he'll be fine.

Our guards just aren't great at feeding the post. And I love our guards. And after Trey takes five dribbles the ball's not going anywhere. He's putting it up, just a question of how. The wings might as well be invisible.

Just an observation: "more athletic" isn't synonymous with "better basketball player." Lumpkin went to the junkyard tonight and really swung the game with his boards and defense, not to mention the timely points. Our bad athletes got to the rim with ease and carved VT up on multiple back cuts. We even rebounded equally, though they beat us on the offensive glass.

A wise college basketball man once told me that winning on the road is hard. Take every single one with no reservations and no apologies.

Does this mean you are going to lay off those 2 more?

They're going to be inconsistent being young'uns - hopefully their off nights coincide when others pick it up.

Losing Law was huge but he will have 3 years.

As nice as it would be have another option on O, the bigger loss was Law's D.

The team D was better w/ Crawford and a somewhat healthy Cobb.

Might have been able to get back to that level if Law were playing.

Demps had an off-nite shooting and was running on fumes at the end, but also too many missed bunnies.

That Olah's banked 3 right before the half and Lumpkin's rattling 3 were huge; as well as BMac being clutch in OT.

That one season, the 'Cats missed those shots (or the opponent made those shots) which resulted in so many close losses.

I feel like we just got a little lackadaisical in the second half. Had a big lead and we were a little careless. Still, we won a road game against a team that clearly has some solid talent. Most of our rotation is composed of fresh and sophs, so any early season wins that we get are great. We will improve as this team gets more chemistry. I think that when compared to the last 2 seasons, we are clearly performing better in the early season, and those 2 teams managed to gut out winning streaks in conference play, so I have high hopes for this team. Shooting is finally looking solid even with an off night from Demps. Just wanna see us limit turnovers and find a way to use Olah effectively

7 games in, we're 6-1, and you're ALREADY burying us, because we won a road game against an ACC team by only 2 in overtime?
Come on, this is silly. It's DECEMBER 1 for goodness sake, it's still Fall trimester.
I see an improving young team that is still probably a year away from Collins being able to play the way he wants. But still very much a legit postseason contender this year.

+1.

A road win in the ACC is about as good as it gets. I thought this was a huge win for us and we didn't even play our best game in the 2nd half. I'm excited to see where this season goes.

Also, I guarantee Va. Tech will not finish 14th in the ACC again this year. Take that to the bank.

From my perspective, it appeared that our backcourt of Demps and BMC got gassed and lost their legs towards the end. Olah played 30 minutes but was gassed for sure as I noticed him barely being able to slow jog up to the offensive end of the court. A few timely timeouts by Collins helped. Demps lost his legs and this will probably become a theme this year since we have to ask him to do a lot of things with little relief. One thing I'd like to add though is that I have now witnessed countless times when Demps isolates for the last shot and fails. I don't remember him being very good at that, as opposed to when someone else dishes off to him for the assist as he drains a 3. Last year he seemed to be money when he gets the ball in motion with the game on the line, but struggled isolating and having the team clear out. This year, he has failed twice now with this, so I think he is better being the outlet for the guy who is bringing the ball up.

The refs were calling some petty fouls today against us. Can't say the refs were with us. We are a good team NJcat. We had a lead but then got gassed. Tech caught up but then we got our second wind after the Overtime break. Olah struggles against any hint of quickness but I felt he handles that better, this year, than last year and each previous year.

On what network was it televised? I'm on the road and after reading the comments I really want to watch it!

You really must be joking... have you watched any of our games the past 2 years? I can think of at least 7 of them offhand where he either hit a game winning shot out of iso, or a game tying shot to extend a game. That's not including 3x alone in the Michigan game alone. Ok he missed twice this year, but trust me he's still a good option when we need someone to create a shot 1v1 to win the game. Either him or Mac, we'll alternate those two, occasionally with some off-ball movement to distract the defense.

I was incommunicado for this game, and came on here just now to see what went down. The score was not posted yet on the list of scheduled games. So off to the message board and see the first listed post: "Kids played hard, .... Cannot fault the effort. ... Cats are just not very good this year ..... Tech were more athletic, particularly Allen who was great.”

Oh, poop. So they lost.

Then I notice another thread, the in-game thread, ".....Second half/OT”.

Bummer, they lost in overtime.

Then, I find the score, but I’m thinking it must be wrong because it shows an 81-79 WIN.

And that is how one plays mind games on oneself.

It would help if you could trust the post players you were feeding to catch the ball. At least twice tonight Olah was fed by Mac in the post but it was almost as if he was playing without fingers. Olah really needs to improve his hands.

Don't be dissing the Gaels now. They are the top team in the MAAC this year, though this year's noncon surpise Monmouth may challenge that distinction; glad we didn't play either in our noncon this year....

" ... he's still a good option when we need someone to create a shot 1v1 to win the game. Either him or Mac ...

1) I don't dispute that Demps is a good option. But somebody really needs to sit him down and remind him that he's not Michael Jordan. There's at least one offensive option that's as good as he is, and depending on the night, there's usually two options (not tonight with that god awful overtime lineup).

If he simply looks for a pass, I'd be satisfied. He's a nice player, but ...

2) On a more positive side, I'm surprised there isn't more BMac love. The kid was a playa tonight!! 19 pts, 8-15, 5 rebounds, 3 steals and 4 assists.

I hope he's conditioned as well as he's playing. I also hope his limp off the court amounts to nothing also.

3) 6-1? Yea, I'll take it.

I'll also keep my fingers crossed for a consistent third scorer and juuuuuuuust a tad more defense. I don't think either is out of the question by the time the conference rolls around.

Im interested in knowing which games last year that demps won with the last shot by bringing the ball up himself and isolating? Maybe you are right but i dont remember him being successful with that once.
I could understand it if we have had success but all i can remember is that the other defenses havestopped him evry single time by forcing him to put up bombs with a defender in front of him because they know he wont pass. BMC bringing the ball up when the game is on the line has been very succssful as he creates the necessary space for a great assist or pull up jumper. With BMC, nobody knows where the last shot is coming from. Often he has found demps which has been successful.

Tre was 1-9 from three, but he was 2-2 from three on shots that didn't count because of moving screens.

Moving screens must be a point of emphasis for refs this season. You almost can't set a screen without getting called for a foul this year. Crazy. Hope things relax once conference play starts.

KenPom predicted this game would finish 73-72 'Cats. At the end of regulation, it was 73-73 and we won in OT. Yes, VT is the 14th best ACC team, however we're currently the 8th best B1G team per his ratings. Road wins are tough, and we got one. Enjoy it.

There was Michigan, and there were two straight out of conference games against not great opponents earlier in the year. And I think at least one other. I believe I recall 3 B1G games where he did the year before, not going to take the time to go back and find the opponents but if you want to search then I'm sure you can find them.

Agreed Demps needs to keep his head up even when on iso. But late in the clock everyone except he and BMac appear afraid or unable to create their own shot, so even if they don't get a great one they are usually the best option. Do you recall the one time in 2H Tap tried to do it? I like the kid, but it was an ugly half push airball. And Lindsey has had some inauspicious possessions when he tries to create late in the clock too. Olah, well for that to work we would need someone to get the ball to him in decent position and him to catch it. So Demps def needs to keep his head when the clock is above 8 - but he's getting better at that, I think he hit Tap twice on pick and pops to the baseline when they double teamed him on a wing screen, and then he dumped to JVZ for a easy dunked when they rotate doubled him on the side to adjust against the pick and pops from earlier. It's just late in the clock the others clench up aside from BMac. And the shot he got at the buzzer - a floater from 7 feet in the lane? I'll take all day.

Other notes
1) Yes Mac is a stud. Nothing to add really aside from that he still is occasionally a bit casual with the ball and if he fixes that he can reduce his TOs by 1 pg. And that please please get him some minutes off against the bad teams upcoming so we don't have the same thing happen as last year late in conference. Same applies to Tre, who played all 45 last night. Get Lindsey and Ash some work.
2) Shout out to Sanjay. He shut down their leading scorer all game. And then props to CC for switching him onto Allen on the last play, cause he knew that's where the ball would go. They had no TOs left and VT didn't know where to go. Sanjay shut him down and he was forced to pass away twice, the other guy had no idea what to do and just ping ponged it back into the black hole of Sanjay's defense. Plus a couple timely shots from him and one nice and 1 inside. I loved how all the players ran to him right after the game and pounded him on the back. They knew he was the player of the game for us.
3) Tap hit some nice shots. We all know he still needs to get better on D though. Same with Falzon.
4) Looks to me like it will be a near even split on minutes between Olah and JVZ. And it's hard for me to argue against that based on what I've seen thus far this year.

5) And defense- we are all agonizing over it. Agreed it's not good yet. But if I'm reading CC and the trends correctly, the guys who can play good defense will be getting more minutes once conference season comes along. Most notably, Skelly and Lumpkin at the 3/4. Tap and Falzon will either need to improve on ball defense and rotations or they will see less court time, particularly late in games. I think even Ash will see 8 mpg (prob mostly in 1H) as long as he doesn't turn it over cause he is a solid defender, prob better than both Mac and Demps.

Since there is confusion about where NU stands in relation to last year, let me try to clarify why this team is better:
1. McIntosh has taken a big step in development and wants the ball in his hands with the game on the line;
2. Demps continues to progress. However, since he is playing 35 plus minutes, he is running out of gas in last couple of minutes;
3. Backup Center Van Zegeren is huge improvement over last year's backup center in Kreisberg;
4. Depth: This team is 9-10 deep which means if players are having an off night, we can sub capable Big 10 level players;
5. Falzon has shown his ability to be a stretch 4 even though he has slumped in last 3-4 games;
6. Skelly has shown an ability to spark the team on offense and defense when he comes in and will be needed to guard PFs in conference play;
7. Lumpkin is a defensive stopper and can effectively guard 1-4 (PG, SG, SF and some undersized PFs). Stopping PGs and SGs is a change from last year.

The two OT wins v. Columbia and Va. Tech are very similar to the Central Michigan and Georgia Tech games last season. But the difference is NU lost those games last season. NU went 9-4 in non-conference last year and this year looks like we could go 3 wins better in the non-conference. Also, NU got blown out in the Northern Iowa game last season 61-42 and NU played a much tighter game with UNC.

Will the loss of Law hurt this team? Yes, but they have the depth to still have a solid season.
