With 2 spots left in this class please pick two.
Horton-Tucker
Riley Battin (Cats still involved???)
Kopp
Bey
Cohill
Any others out there?

I think we were looking at Cohill for PG, he also doesn't seem that focused on NU right now.

My best bet is we get THT and maybe Bey (I suspect he is higher on us than people think). I think Kopp will go to Vanderbilt or A&M. It's also possible another player emerges that the staff likes later in the year.

THT. He's talented and he's a Chicago guy.

The other spot? I want a big guy - 6-10, 240 and larger. Even if he's a project or red-shirt. The Cats need to concentrate on a little bulk.

Option B: Anything except a tweener - shooter... point guard ... unless he's top 100.

I want TalenT the most. If NU gets him, I'll take whoever is the fourth, even if he's a non-contributor in his first year. This is what I've dreamed of for decades. Great recruits are looking at NU and saying, "yeah, I wanna be a part of that."

That 2018-2019 team, even minus Lindsey and B-Mac, is gonna be stacked.

THT and a wing guard that can fill it up. Bey is my choice based on what we know. Have never been high on Cohill. Don't see the value of taking Kopp with Nance and THT on board. Doubt there is an available BIG worth taking a flyer on. Early news is that we would like to take a couple BIGs in 2019.

Bey can fill it up. Keep in mind that CCC's roster is evolving into an ideal 1-3-1 arrangement. A ball handler -- 3 versatile wings that can do it all -- and one BIG.

For those thinking that you still need a traditional "big" in today's game, listen to this interview with Steve Kerr on the modern game of basketball. Yes, he is referring to NBA, but I think it is still relevant to college. I see Collins' system being much closer to that of Kerr's in Golden State vs. that of Pat Riley's at LA and NY.

You don't need, or perhaps don't even WANT, a traditional beefy big that can't "run". Pace and space is the counter to modern defenses. I'd expect more recruits at C along the lines of Pardon and Benson.

Then again, maybe I don't know jack...

Kopp is wing who scores. Solid outside shot and good moves to the rim.

Really like THT---both his tape and the Simeon connection. It seems that with all of his visits he would have committed; however, now that we have 2 stellar recruits it may be easier for him to pull the trigger.

Correct ... but can he defend the wing guards he'll face in the BIG? Probably not. That's why nobody is recruiting him as a wing guard.
Plus ... his shooting percentages from the AAU circuit give me pause for concern. Less than 40% overall, and less than 30% from behind the arc.

I see Kopp as a slightly more upside Taphorn. Good to grow into a role player. Cant see him ever being an impact guy.

Yes, but imagine what a dominant big man who can run, like a young Shaq or David Robinson, would do in today's NBA. It would be no contest. These things go in cycles. Big men are definitely not in vogue right now but just wait until the next dominant, athletic big man comes in the league. The cycle will turn and the rest of teams will copy.

Kerr's position, if you listened to the interview, was that the rules changes regarding zone defense and physical play in the NBA have made it much easier to shut down a traditional low post player. When Shaq was dominant, you could easily space the floor and give him 1-1 opportunities in the low post. That is no longer possible. So, it is not so much due to the lack of athletic big men in the world, but the change in rules in the NBA. He credits D'Antonio for devising the "pace and space" offense to counter the rules changes. The basic focus of the offense being:

- create turnovers on D or run after every rebound, forcing the opponent to get back on D after a shot rather than crashing the boards. Tough on traditional bigs to keep up with this stamina wise.
- spread the floor on Offense and chuck a lot of 3's to negate the benefits of a zone defense on 1-1 play in the mid-range and low post game.

In this system, as Kerr puts it, traditional 4s are now 5s, 3s are now 4s, etc. The lineups are smaller, faster, more athletic and everyone needs to be able to shoot the 3, ideally.

If the rules change regarding zone defense, then I can see the big centers of old returning to being in-vogue. For now, it seems that the Golden State model is what most teams are pursuing.

For NU, go back and watch the Wisconsin game to see how a zone / help defense can negate a dominant post player even when we don't necessarily have the size to match-up 1-1. Then, run the floor on him and get to his lungs and legs.

I'm expecting to see a leaner and quicker Benson this year for the Cats as I think this better fits the system and approach they are taking. He needs to be able to run the floor on break-outs and get back quickly on D. This, as opposed to beefing up to "bang" with post players in the B1G. We'll see... will be interesting.
