With the game back on a normal channel last night, I got a chance to see our Cats and now offer these thoughts

1. Nick Martinelli has become a complete basketball player. Another big scoring night from Nick, except now he's doing it from all three levels. Yes, he still has the goofy flip shot near the rim working, but now he can hit the three and even now has the pull up mid-range shot. On top of that, he still rebounds, but he's added passing and ballhandling. That cross court pass from under the hoop out to Berry for the open 3 was probably his prettiest play of the night. He is also bringing the ball up the court to help break the press (though he makes me a little nervous when he is forced to dribble up with his right hand... fortunately no future opponents will realize he's left handed).

2. There was discussion by the broadcast team last night whether Nick will be able to keep this up when Brooks returns or will there be confusion about roles on this team. I believe they will become a two-headed monster. I compare it to Jayson Tatum and Jaylen Brown for my Boston Celtics. They will just take turns being great. It sounds like we may begin to find out Friday night as the broadcast kept speculating Brooks will be back for the next game.

3. I have it on good authority (ok... out of my butt) that Jaylen Leach's girlfriend texted him at half time that if he didn't pull himself together and start playing better, she was leaving him. Boy, did that work. He was a different player in the second half. He played with more confidence that also translated into hitting his shots. The pull up mid range shots were particularly exciting as that shot should always be there for him. Teams will respect his ability to hit the three pointer, which means they will close out on him hard, giving him the opening to drive to the basket. If help defenders stay back to protect against the lob to Big Matt, then that elbow jumper will be open.

4. Speaking of Big Matt, I don't know how many times now he's opened up the game with a lob dunk and I say to myself... that will be there all night. Maybe this is the game where Matt has a big scoring night. And then it doesn't happen. I don't know if teams adjust and he has no second act, or what. That said, he does what he does, which is to be a big body in the middle that clogs the lane on defense and makes the opposing defenders have to respect the lob threat, which circles you back to point #3 above.

5. Justin Mullins showed some sparks last night. He took it to the basket aggressively a couple times leading to 5 points. But it was the other areas where he stuffed the stat sheet. 7 rebounds, 3 assists and 3 steals. Not bad for coming off the bench. As he gains confidence, his ability to contribute should grow.

6. Tough night for the frosh. This was a bit of step back for them. KJ missed all of his shots and just looked like he was rushing things. He did finish with 5 assists and 2 steals, so it wasn't all bad, but he just didn't look as comfortable last night. Poor Jello had an even rougher night. He just couldn't seem to stay on the floor as he kept making mistakes, mostly on defense. There was one sequence where he checked in at a time out, promptly grabbed the UIC player on the inbounds play to draw the foul, and promptly got yanked back out for a Chris Collins' tongue lashing. Those are the growing pains of being a freshman. He'll keep improving.

7. The defense continues to impress. They held a UIC team who had scored 91 in each of their first two games to 74 points and forced 20 turnovers. Again, I am so impressed with the way our guys move and communicate on defense. The hedging, the switching, the recovering... all signs of a very well coached team who believes in spending the effort to defend well. That will continue to keep us in games all year as we figure out who is going to score that night besides Nick.

8. I don't know whether to dwell more on the fact that we took 33 free throws last night or the fact that we missed 11. Equally, one could be upset that Nick missed 5 free throws... but I'm more impressed that he got to the line 10 times. That is star quality stuff (the 10 attempts.... not the 5 misses). Something tells me Nick stayed late last night shooting 500 extra free throws after the game.

Still too early to really know what this all means. How we will compete when BIG play rolls around is still a little unclear to me. Will our guys continue to lean into the moment as the lights get brighter? I sure hope so. I think the signs are there of a good team, but they have to keep improving.

I think the fact that we have won a few games without Brook and the ability to fight off a comeback attempt plus the freshmen and Mullins all getting some run bodes well for later in the season. Once we get back Brooks look out. This could certainly be a team in the top third of the big ten standings

I am impressed with KJ’s athleticism. He’s going to be the lead guard for this team. I think he’s going to be a good one.

I love what Mullins does without the ball. The points will come.

Big Matt seems to be moving well.

Hunger’s basketball instincts are questionable. You never know with these Canadians.

Hunger’s newfound offensive aggressiveness is obvious, even to a basketball simpleton like me. It has yet to translate to consistent production, but the approach is noticeably different.

I think the same thing. It's always, "Matt is way more involved early tonight! He's finally back!" Then basically the last 35 minutes he accumulates only fouls and minutes on the bench. This reminds me of the great Bulls teams of the early 1990s. Bill Cartwright was never going to score a lot of points, but he seemed to get a basket or two early in the game to kind of set up everything else. Then they stopped passing to him.

The team IS much better with Nicholson on the floor. I like that Hunger provides more offensive potential and when he's on, it's a lot of fun, but his defense is beyond shaky. Nicholson can contribute a lot more without even scoring or putting things into the box score.

Why would Collins bring in fitzmorris when the doesn’t play him? Seems like a waste of a scholarship.

Few thoughts:

Martinelli - He started the game by pulling up for a jumper and missing. And I was just thinking how confident this dude is, that now a pull up jumper is something he knows he has a good percentage on. Not a spot up shot, a pull up jumper off the drible. He missed, but that showed how good he is now

KJ - The air ball play kind of gave it away how he is still adapting. His shooting routine is much faster than last year. He obviously worked on it. He had to, everyone has to speed it up against tougher competition that closes out faster and with much taller dudes. But, ultimately, he is still adapting. That shot looked hella rushed, like more of the prototypical freshman than the somewhat cocky one we have been seeing

Leach - Great second half, no problems being the main reference handling the ball. But that does not tell me much. It's such a difference in speed and pressure what UIC gives you vs the Dayton guards. And the latter is more along the lines of what we will find in league play. It's not just pressing the ball, it's also overplaying the passing lanes, etc. UIC does not compare. Hopefuly the game was good for at least building some confidence.

Berry - I am encouraged and feel these games will get him where we need him. We know he is capable.

Hunger - I keep waiting for his moxy and fearless, not afraid to shoot it, kind of attitude to materialize. But, ultimately, he continues to have a good shooting game in maybe 1 out of 5 times he is out there. I don't know at what point Fitz deserves more of a shot.

Ciaravino - What comes to mind is the balance Collins has to strike with him and KJ, guiding them to avoid dumb mistakes but also, at the same time, not hurting their confidence. Hope he does not fade into just allowing others a bit of rest. Hope he is more than that.

Mullins - He's getting a bit more aggressive. Timid, yes, but it looks like it. Or maybe I want to see it. I dunno.

Matt - Yeah, the lob threat was very different from Dayton, but so were the defenders.

Didn't we leave an open scholarship anyway? We tried the kid who went to Miami. Fitz's looks a lot like a use it or lose it. It might look a bit indifferent until Matt or Hunger have an injury. Which they both did, long term ones.

Windham kind of reminds me of AJ Storr. Not necessarily his game, but his confidence and obvious skill. He's a guy who COULD take over a game because that's what he's been doing his whole life, but his on-court contributions haven't caught up to his confidence yet. But it's coming, and we've already seen flashes. He had a bad game shooting last night (yes, he rushed almost all of the shots he took), but he also passed the ball well, including a really tough pass to Nicholson early in the game when he looked like a veteran point guard.

Fitzmorris is what, 25? Come to the Big Ten. Wave a towel. Be ready to play if the guys ahead of him get hurt or in foul trouble (which has happened their whole careers). Go to the NCAAs. Not a bad gig when your basketball career is winding down.

Hunger will contribute this year. Fitz should only play in emergencies based on what I saw in the first game.

I’m not sold on Leach as the primary ball handler. It looked to me like he struggled bringing it up against actual pressure, and almost lost it a few times running the point. I think Windham will become that guy in a few months. I expect when the competition gets tougher, we’ll see more matchups deciding who brings the ball up.

I thought the team did well getting the ball in against the press. It was the second or third pass that was poorly executed for a turnover. Hopefully that gets fixed.

One of the things we may really miss about Boo is his free throws, especially closing out games. Nick has been struggling so far. His jump shot free throw form seems to be mechanically riskier than a traditional form. The big FT disparity was really about the last two minutes of UIC attempting a come back. We’re lucky they shot poorly from the line as well.

Nick and Brooks in tandem, with Matt clogging things up, should really open up outside our shooters. I just want Brooks’return to wait until he’s 150% because he’ll go as hard as he can when he hits the court.

Boo's free throws were so clutch. I noticed when Berry went to the line last night that his FT% last year was 89.5%, but then he missed one. He doesn't get to the line a lot, but when he does, he'll usually hit them. Same with Leach.

Martinelli made 78% of his free throws last year, though on only 50 attempts. If he's the focal point of the offense this year, he should get a lot more than 1 1/2 attempts per game. So far this year he is 16-for-25. I agree with whoever said before that he was probably in the gym last night shooting free throws long after pretty much everyone else left. I wouldn't be surprised if Brooks were in there with him.

Good analysis overall. This play you mention from Martinelli was really a great play by Justin Mullins. Mullins set a great off-the-ball pick on Martinelli's man a the top of the key. That freed up Mart to get the pass on the baseline. UIC's defense panicked, and everybody rushed at Nick. Nick recognized the situation and made the great pass to Berry. It was fun to be in the stands and see the whole play develop exactly as I'm sure the coaches drew it up.

I thought the same thing with Big Matt. I think he dunked for our first score in all 3 games. However, we are going 4 on 5 on offense after that. There has to be an effort to get Big Matt more involved. Unfortunately, he had trouble getting the handle on passes and that parts on him. I would like to see him as aggressive as he can be in the offensive glass. That will get him more minutes.

Hunger is obviously more skilled on offense. On defense, he’s not close to Big Matt. He has to be much better on that end as he’s bringing up images of RY to me after these first few games, I think CCC is going to have to pick his spots with situation substitutions. As someone said, we need Matt Hungerson.

Mullins was pretty great all game. He seems to have excellent court vision / awareness. Although he did make a great steal and then immediately turn the ball over. But I like him on the court.

I'm somewhat with you on Leach's ballhandling, EF. However, you can also see the experience in his composure that makes me feel better about the ball in his hands compared to others.

Like several other parts of this team, I think we'd all feel better about breaking the press with Barnhizer's help.

OTOH, I'm happy to say that was not the same Leach we saw at Dayton. Hopefully, his play last night will be more the norm.

Generally, I'm not crazy about this group's foundational ability. But they are doing a hell of a job with what they have - especially Martinelli. WOW!!

This might be something with Barnhizer. However, am I the only person growing concerned whether BB will be part of this. He hasn't even touched the practice floor in how many months. If he's not practicing by 12/1, he probably won't be ready for Iowa and Illinois.

With regards to Nicholson on offense, I guess it depends on what you consider "getting him more involved." If you watched the post-game presser with him and Nick, he articulates that his top priority is defense, and on offense to set screens and get his teammates open. He does love getting alley-oops, but he knows that comes within the flow of the offense. And if you checked the Torvik box scores, he was 2nd on the team with +9.8 on Box Plus/Minus (and team high 9 on the defensive end of that stat). If I'm gonna critique - he's gotta stay outta foul trouble - his FC/40 jumped up to 5.7 after yesterday, and I get he hasn't been playing more than 20 this year, so perhaps he's still ramping up - but if we want the better defensive setup, he's gonna be the anchor.

With regards to Hunger, he's still figuring it out. While he started shooting from outside, as the game wore on, he started attacking the paint - which is where I (and Rapheal Davis) thought he'd be better served against that UIC frontcourt, which is lanky but not particularly agile. I like the instincts, and the results will come. With regards to his defense - yep, he has a bit of Luka ("WHO, ME?!"), and he's gotta improve his technique in walling up. I expect that he'll improve there - maybe not be the defensive rock that Nicholson is; but Hunger gives you the promise of two-way play at the Center spot against their bench 5 (barring Nicholson 2 foul auto-bench), and I dig that match up.

Matt's game really progressed last season, and I believe his foul rate declined significantly. I think he started last season with an injury issue or perhaps poor conditioning. Regardless, he got it together.

I think he looks better than he did at this point last year. He's moving well. I think his fouls will decrease as his play accumulates.

Regarding his offense, that's just not his game and never will be. He has a TON of value on defense.

I think he has been working out. The broadcast team last night commented that he looked great at a workout they must have gotten to see. They think he'll be back next game.

Just so I am clear, I believe the team functions much better with Big Matt in there. He is an excellent defender and we need his size. Yes, I want him to be involved more with at least a couple of garbage put backs each game. His offense outside of dunks and put backs is very limited, so I don’t expect him to put up jumpers from the elbow. I like that Hunger can hit an open shot, but he just is not a good defender now against skilled big men. Like you, hope that progresses, but candidly I haven’t seen it so far. Matt will see more minutes with a lead, but if we get down in conference play, I think it’ll be Hunger due to his offense.

When Ciaravino returned to the bench, Brooks immediately slid over to sit next to him, and he and Nicholson gave some support and instruction to Ciaravino while keeping his head up. That kind of leadership from within the team is so valuable. Collins didn’t have to say much. Overall, a positive learning experience for a kid who’s gonna be a star here.

Agree with those who question Leach as the primary ballhandler against better guard play. I think (or hope) it will be Windham by January.
It isn't Ty Berry.
When Barnhizer gets back, I think Collins will...

Rotate Leach, Berry and Windham at the 2 guard spots.
Play Martinelli and Barnhizer 30-35 minutes as dual "small forwards"
Mullins and Ciaravino will mainly sub for those 2, but will also pick up situational minutes for Leach, Berry and Windham.
Nicholson and Hunger are a platoon and may never see each other on the court.

If Leach and Windham are having trouble with quicker guards, Collins will have Barnhizer and Martinelli handling the ball a lot, trying to get into the paint. Given that, Nicholson will probably be getting out of the way, setting screens to free up 3 point shooters or making entry passes to the two scorers and any cutters.

Collins will occasionally play small ball, with Martinelli at the 5, Barnhizer at the 4 and Mullins or Ciaravino at the 3.

We are clearly better when Matt is on the floor. When Barnhizer comes back, we should have enough scoring on the floor to offset Matt’s offensive limitations. I am hoping Leach or KJ can develop some chemistry with Matt on the pick and roll. Otherwise, I don’t think we need to make an effort to get him more involved. Good defensive teams generally don’t give up multiple alley oop dunks so it’s hard to try to force that. He is who he is at this point. Run the floor, set great screens and get more offensive rebounds is what I would like to see from him going forward.

If Leach and Windham are having trouble with quicker guards, Collins will have Barnhizer and Martinelli handling the ball a lot
We saw a lot of this last year, Barnhizer often handled the ball as he had a bigger and slower defender on him. We already saw it this year with Martinelli in Dayton.

In transition, it often makes sense, guards having problems or not. Why risk bringing the ball up against pressure when there's a decent ball handler who is guarded by someone who does not press. Last year one can argue it also saved Boo some energy.

The only other person I can remember shooting jump shot free throws is Michael J. Fox in Teen Wolf.

Hal Greer did it for the 76ers back in the day.

Coach said in the after game interview something about Brooks practicing with the team and from his tone I got the impression he expects Brooks will hit the court next week.
