Mooney is a possible grad transfer from U of South Dakota who Jeff Goodman reported has been contacted by NU. Goodman says he may be the most coveted grad transfer guard on the market.

Mooney is from the Chicago suburbs (he started his career at Air Force) so hopefully we have a good shot to land him. He’s a scoring 6’3” guard and I think he’d be a huge addition.

Good find. As far as proximity to where he grew up, and the prospect of immediate playing time, NU has to look quite attractive.

Some comments from him from a 2015 Trib article:

“In a program, what I'm looking for is, is a team going to give me a place that has good facilities and good fans — and just a winning program and a winning environment? But the coaching staff and the teammates are really important to me, because you're going to be spending so much time with those guys. Just making sure I really like the coaching staff — the guys that are recruiting me — and then the teammates, as well.

And, from a school standpoint, just a good academic school because that's going to set you up for your life after basketball. So definitely thinking about academics as well, but I'd probably say basketball is my main focus.

It's just a tough place to be at, and I'm trying to go to a school where I can get home more often because family's really important to me. And if there's an opportunity to play close to home, I would definitely put that on the top of my list.”

And a little bonus ;)

“I didn't know exactly what I was getting myself into, especially the way the Air Force Academy runs a Princeton-style offense. I watched them play and they told me they run the Princeton, but I didn't actually really know what it was like until playing in it. And it's very restrictive. You kind of play like robots, pretty much. There's not really basketball instincts involved — like you don't read and react, you go from piece to piece to piece. And I didn't really like playing like that. I loved the coaching staff and the teammates, but I didn't like playing with that.”

Nice find. But then why did he go to SD? That likely didn't check many of those boxes. Hard to get back home to spend time with family, Academics likely nothing special. And as far as winning program and the like, not that much prior to him getting there. Coaches and players? Well again he is looking to leave.

Sign that kid up. He's a perfect fit.

Did he mention the size of the gym? Ouch, he did mention 'good" fans, did he mean a lot of them?

He mentioned not wanting a school with cranky old alumni who post complaints ad nauseum on message boards.
Truth hurt? Looks like Fitz complained about the NU fans or lack of them today. Guess just a cranky old coach or just maybe a truthful one.

According to Evan Daniels Twitter Collins to visit Mooney on Sunday. Also visiting over the weekend is Bobby Hurley, Creighton, Memphis, Indiana and Texas Tech.

Not sure about his eligibility, but pretty sure he never really recovered after the auto accident. Wonder if he still likes racing around in fast cars?

Where’s the mid-major love, Hungry? Mooney is not a Jackrabbit. That’s South Dakota State. He’s a South Dakota Coyote. Ahhh-ooooooo!

Coyotes, Jackrabbits...they're all morsels of food for the Fighting Sioux Hawks

You guys need to go back to the old nickname and mascot, dude. Sharpest-looking hockey uniforms on the face of the planet. Bar none.
CometMan, you're stretching if you're calling ANY hockey jerseys better than those of the Blackhawks. Dems da facts.

"The cayote is a living, breathing allegory of Want. He is always hungry. He is always poor, out of luck and friendless. The meanest creatures despise him and even the flea would desert him for a velocipede."

Since when should a guard not be 'scoring.' Isn't that what they are supposed to do?

According to Evan Daniels Twitter Collins to visit Mooney on Sunday.

According this article, the two Facetime'd. "I really like Northwestern,” Mooney said. “I haven’t been able to sit down face to face with them."

Also: "I think for sure I’ll visit Texas Tech. Probably Northwestern and Oregon.” For once our facilities can compete with Oregon's. Not on the same level, but finally in the same neighborhood.

And he "probably" plans to take a visit. EEENTERSTING.

Reading way too much into it, but if the question really was posed as "What else stood out about your meetings this week?" and his first comment was "I really like Northwestern," that's at least a sign that we're still in it.

A little confusing... He's described as a shooting guard who can hit the three. Nothing wrong with that but is he a point guard or a shooting guard?

Maybe CCC thinks of him like Grayson Allen, ideally playing the 2 but capable of taking minutes at LG. In other words, a combo guard. Would provide two nice options to plug in depending on the need... Mooney for instant scoring punch, Ash for defensive stops. That said, I thought the same would be the case last season with Brown and Ash. Didn't quite work out that way.

Statistically,Ash was as good as Mac last year shooting wise!

If Mooney were to come to NU it changes the dynamic of NU for next season, again.

Pick you starters from this group of experienced players:

Law (Sr.), Pardon (Sr.), Taylor (Sr.), Mooney (Sr.), Falzon (Jr.), Benson (Jr.), Turner (Jr.), Ash (Jr.) and Gaines (So.)

And then sprinkle in your four freshman: Nance, Kopp, Lathon, Young

Wish the video had showed more ...no doubt he can shoot...can he play defense? also how will skills translate to DI? Can he Not be the guy and play within a system?

I'm certainly no "basketball stats" guy, but from what I can tell advanced stats have him as at least an average defender. Seems to be driven primarily by averaging more than 2.0 steals/game each of the last two years.

My favorite item from a quick KenPom dive is that South Dakota played a team last year called Peru State. (And Mooney only had 7 points!)

NAIA school from Nebraska, I believe. A quick Google search shows they actually weren't half bad -- 22-14 and a win in the NAIA national tournament.

No, he wasn't. BMac was about a 39% shooter (34% from 3) and Ash was about 36% (32% from 3) That is about a 10% difference. But BMac was also supposed to be lead guard and coordinate the O (something that Ash seemed a little short on) while Ash was more of a 2 so his shooting % needed to be higher to justify more minutes on the floor. And while Ash has often been touted for his Defensive prowess, we saw a lot of holes when he tried to guard PGs.

I’d be totally good with this new dynamic. All of a sudden NU turns into a brand new, experienced team with guys who want to win now. A totally different vibe from relying on a bunch of freshmen. It would be nice to ease them into the college game.

I’d bet Mooney would start over Lathon at lead guard. Collins will at least be telling him he has every opportunity to win that role this summer.

Mooney
Taylor
Law
Falzon OR Gaines OR Turner OR Nance
Pardon

Looks pretty good. Especially the 40 PPG combined between the grad transfers.
