MAX GREEN IS A WILDCAT!!!

I thought we’d lost him when he was scheduled to go to FSU next week. This is a potentially very big pickup. Patriot player of the year as a frosh. The 6-6 freshman averaged 15 pts, 5 rebounds, and 4 assists.

Now we just need a center.

Patriot League Rookie of the Year.

Could be dicey if there is any chance we are still waiting for a definitive clarification on Barnhizer waiver attempt. Even if it is low probability……
What is the connection? # of scholarships? Because we don't have any experienced players over 6'7". We would get crushed in the B1G

I thought you could have 13 scholarship players.
5 freshman.
KJ Angelo Mullins Clayton Martinelli
Green Reid
That is 12.
For reference, Boo announced he was returning around May 8 a couple years ago. NU had to hold that spot waiting for him. Not even sure if Brooks is a possibility for next year, but if he is, the Cats would seemingly have to hold a spot for him.

“Max Green” sounds like a Michigan State commit.

Wake me up when we sign someone with “Purple” in their name.

Yeah but that 13th spot has to be held for a big man transfer. i’ve seen some chatter on The Rock about a potential 14th scholarship for this season though. Maybe that’s the plan if Brooks gets a waiver

Technically it’s just 15 roster spots, but NU reportedly only funding 13 scholarships. Only way we could take 2 Bigs is if Hurlburt or Smith leave and we fund the 14th spot.

It’s not. NU is only funding 13, going to 14 would be a second transfer Big.

Really good get, at least on paper. We have now a fair amount of 3 pt threats in Windham and the two transfers. Should help capitalize on Nicky Buckets’ game.

Should also make us more attractive for the bigs we are pursuing.

These new rules are confusing. If we funded a 14th, that would mean cutting a walk-on yes? (Not that I’m complaining - I’m just trying to understand how it works. 15 is a hard cap no?)

The limitation is now roster spots regardless of scholarship vs walk-on. 15 spots, supposedly NU only funding 13 scholarships.

So… yes, a 14th scholarship player would mean one less walk-on. Supposedly Hurlburt moving on, but haven’t seen anything official.

Awesome! Welcome to Northwestern Max!! The stats above show he has a good all around game, also shot 38% from 3 on fairly high volume (2.3-5.9 per game) which is huge as we will need shooters around Martinelli next year assuming he comes back.

Great work CC!!

No chance.
Why do you say that?
I'm just curious.
Verbalcommits lists 2110 players in the portal, but none of them is named Luke Hunger.
When Hunger posted on social media that he was entering the portal, he said he might be returning to NU.

So that suggests a chance he's "maybe" sticking around.
Right?

I was pretty enthused about Max Green when I saw his numbers and size and "freshman of the year" but then I went over on EvanMiya.com and see that he is rated as a -0.36 for his first year. An average D1 player is 0.0. Ty Berry, Jalen Leach and KJ Windham are all in the neighborhood of 3.0 or higher.

Obviously Green has upside, but the level of play in the Patriot League is such that the best team (Bucknell) is rated at -1.5, or 6 points per game worse than Washington. Holy Cross was lowest rated in the Patriot at -11. Northwestern is rated 15.
So Northwestern was about 26 points better than Holy Cross last year.

Mr Green will have to step up to make an impact in the rotation.

Every new player is always the savior, the next MJ. I still see KJ and Marty as only sure things. I think other two 80 minutes plus backup minutes behind kj and Marty are up for open competition.

Also see major gap at the five. And it doesn’t seem going small is the wave of the future for competitive P5 ball.

Always true for transfers from lower conferences. At 6’6” with outside range, I see his skills translating to power competition. Look at the schools pursuing Green. They feel the same.

Good pick up - particularly since we'll have a few years to develop him. Sure, the Patriot league is not the B1G. But D1 basketball is so competitive and balanced - If he's ROY in any D1 league, that's a great pickup for us and arguably better than a 4-star HS recruit who hasn't been tested at the next level.

Two things I wonder about. 1) Do we know anything about his D? 2) does his release point look a little forward and low? No doubt CCC and team have assessed in a more informed way than me. Eager to hear from people with more knowledge.

The last Patriot League player we picked up worked out pretty well. I saw a few minutes of his highlights to give me enough confidence to say that he will be a good pickup for us. But I didn't even have to see that to know that given who else wanted him.

Leach was actually from the Metro Atlantic Conference before transferring to NU. But your point remains. He turned out to be a good player. He really progressed as a player.
