Mel Tucker may get fired next

At least he didn’t sent up multiple mechanisms to prevent a hazing culture that ultimately failed.

Even if you took everything he says at face value, it will still mean he is getting fired. MSU isn't going to keep him around because of the Nasser stuff.

Not fired yet (because the clauses allowing them to fire with cause, i.e. no pay, likely require the investigation to be complete; also Title IX investigations typically freeze contractual status until closed) but a "permanent suspension" appears to be what they're putting him in until he gets fired.

Yes, effectively he will never coach there again.

It appears the Title IX investigation didn't finish before it was leaked to USA Today, so that story will drag on for a bit...

Wow, a reversal 2 hours after the decision, outdoes our 2 days. The student newspaper should interview the plaintiff and get him back to fired tomorrow.

Boys will be boys.

There wasn’t even horseplay!

First amendment rights!

She talks about sex so much she was asking for it!

Yeah, but can you proooooooooove it?
I can see someone’s been through corporate sex harassment training

Here's my 100% completely baseless conspiracy theory:

Hearing already that Tucker has admitted to masturbating while on the phone with her and insisting it was consensual - his willing admission tells me there's proof of it somehow/somewhere, and obviously embarrassing regardless of consent or not. Boosters or other nefarious forces caught wind of this and have gotten the woman to be complicit, and are using it as the basis of getting him fired for cause, giving Sparty an out for their $90M+ mistake.

If I were Jimbo Fisher, I'd be overwhelmingly nervous the Texas A&M boosters are taking notes on a scandal here...

But seriously...Mel Tucker, of ALL people with whom to have anything less than a 10000000000000000% consensual relationship??!?!

The LSU boosters are also excited at the prospect of a fresh Brian Kelly scandal.

Do you think any of their recruits may de-commit and consider coming here?! 🤷
Pretty sure there would be very few that admissions would allow. No offense to MSU as an institution, but I think he was wholesale raiding the portal before Neon made it cool

There’s at least one — we offered and recruited Reggie Powers very hard before he picked MSU.

Tucker is a savage! Harassing a woman who makes her living speaking about harassment takes some major juevos

Hang up the phone?
This is a bizarre story in all sorts of ways

Mel Tucker has been married for 20 years and has 2 sons.
Brenda Tracy (the alleged victim) is divorced.
27 phone conversations (averaging 30 minutes) between the two suggests their relationship may not have been strictly professional, but is not proof of anything.
Michigan State's investigation concluded on July 25th.
MSU made no public comment with an October 5 hearing scheduled to determine Tucker's punishment.

USA Today then got a heads up and 1200 pages of investigation documents from Brenda Tracy.
USA Today goes public with a story.
MSU suspends Tucker almost immediately.

Is that all accurate?

There is a power imbalance at play (wealthy Big Ten football coach). He reached out to her in his capacity as head coach and asked her to speak to the team. It is not appropriate for somebody in his role to pursue a romantic relationship with somebody in her position, even if he thought it was consensual.

My son is at Michigan State so I got the email that the University President sent out to the community. So, MSU decided to bring in an outside, third party to investigate after their internal investigation. The October 4th and 5th dates were the dates agreed upon by all parties. I'm guessing that is discrepancy between the two dates you listed.

I'm not sure what you do if you're the university. On the one hand, you could argue that they should have come out with this right away, but on the other hand, if Tucker is not entirely guilty, then it wouldn't be fair to drag this out into the public until the investigation is complete. Of course, maybe you could predict that someone would leak it to the press, but still.. it's a no win situation for the university.

Thanks for the details.
According to an online article, the investigator finished her work on July 25th and recommended a hearing to determine if Tucker had violated any school policy. That hearing was scheduled for the first week of October.

Notably, university officials are not supposed to be told the details of sexual misconduct investigations until after the case is resolved (to protect the accused from reputational damage). So MSU was going to have its hearing in October, until the (alleged) victim went to the USA Today with all the documents of the investigation. This move gave her the opportunity to tell her side of the story. Once that became public, MSU suspended Tucker.

It familiar territory, but it seems to me that MSU is handling it much more responsibly than Northwestern did.
