Has anyone seen Flynn Nagel so far? I think that based on what Turk said and others that Roberts is basically a lock to burn his shirt because of his insane quickness and return abilities. I have very high hopes for Nagel as well and like Jackson last year, I think Nagel plays this year and has an impact.

You're basing things on what "He who doesn't want me to use his name in threads in which he hasn't posted" says? That's like writing a research paper and quoting wikipedia.

Do we know if Roberts is burning his shirt? Only Turk has pointed this out. Nothing against Turk and his high assessment on Roberts but I haven't heard of anyone else giving such a report. In fact, most of the talk on this board has centered around Nagel burning his shirt. I couldn't imagine Nagel and Roberts burning their shirts at the same position unless Roberts is going to be our return man.

Fitz said all 4 Freshman WR's had a chance to play this year! Think at least 2 see the field.

I think Green would be a lock but all I hear is Roberts and Nagel. Did we even recruit 4 receivers last year? Is someone hurt? I don't believe 4 freshman receivers will burn their shirts unless there is going to be a surprise house cleaning. Most likely, Fitz just said that to motivate the players he intended to motivate.

Salient point Shakes, but wasn't there a scrimmage thread based on NUsports tweets detailing Roberts catches? Can't remember (AGE and too many blows to the head, Hockey and Boxing) My reasoning on Nagel is based purely on Jackson's greatness last year. Seems to me that Nagel is just pass catching machine and that he'll simply do the same at this next level. We could really use someone who is reliable and open 24/7. If Roberts does play and I think based on what he provides us he should, it's just one more quick/fast weapon. We need as much of that as possible to take pressure off of Thorson.

Yes: Green, Nagel, Roberts and Charlie Fessler...........

From what I'm hearing, Nagel is a stud and a lock to play.

I haven't read a lot about Vitale's brother on this board, but what I'm hearing is that he's going to play - and play both ways: D and O.

I'm also hearing that the freshmen DT's are going to be good enough by committee that Lowry will be able to stay outside. That'd be great if he isn't forced inside.

I have been singing Tommy Vitale's praises for months but there is no way in hell they will ask a true freshman to play both ways. He will play as a LB. What offensive position are your "sources" telling you he will play?

Your sources are either drunk or messing with you to see if you'd post it.

Over the last 2 years, Fitz recruited, Scanlan, Wilson, McHugh, Hall. So, if Fessler, Roberts, Nagel, Green all burn their shirt, then some in that previous bunch are being passed over, and possibly the senior XY-BA. And I expect Christian Jones to be full go by BIG season, CamD to be a starter, Vault to start, and Buckley to play 'extensively'. So, it seems to me that if those 4 freshmen burn their shirts, then the previous recruits must not be panning out.

FWIW, I don't believe Fitz is coachspeaking, it's just hard to imagine that all 4 would burn their shirts. But if they do, then I'm sure it's because they are solid and can have an immediate impact.

Wikipedia is right a lot of the times, but I wouldn't base anything on what I read on there. Let's put it this way... I trust star ratings far more than I trust the opinion in question. That doesn't mean that Rivals was wrong on Jadeveon Clowney being really good. It just means you have no idea when rivals is going to be right or when they're making crap up. So if you want to base the opinion that Roberts will burn his shirt on NUsports tweets, I'm all for it.... if you want to base it on a guy who said McMcall "Banked on having a solid power blocking OL" in 2014... well, who knows what he saw and what he makes up.

Is Nagel nailing down a slot or outside position? What about Roberts?

I heard that he practiced both ways just this week, in fact. And they're serious about it. Don't believe me. It's fine with me. My info is good.

Turk in regards to your thoughts on Fitz and the receivers...Perhaps this group is simply just that much better than the others. This doesn't necessarily mean the others are not good though. Roberts obviously has burner speed and Nagel is a natural ala the kid from Illinois last year. The others I'm not sure about. I think Fitz has realized though as talent improves that he must get the best people on the field. If you think about it, burning a red shirt is not that big of a deal because if they are ready it's four years on the field either way. If you have a wealth of talent like OSU then sure red shirting is almost mandatory. But NU needs the best guys on the field RIGHT NOW! Jackson was a great contributor last year and this year I think Nagel and Roberts will be this year.

No doubt NU needs the best guys on the field right now. Especially as we look prime for a 4 year run on Thorson's back. I'm sure we are going with Thorson because he gives us the best chances to win this year, but if he has the added luxury of mixing and matching with the same receivers for the next 4 years then that's fine. Burning a shirt off of Nagel and Roberts was a no brainer, but if we also burn a shirt off of Green and Fessler then it's hard to see what that means???? Yes, Fessler and Green are among Fitz' best wr recruits over the past few years, but does that mean that we are going to spread the ball around more? Does it mean we are going to dink and dunk a lot this year since freshmen wide outs aren't the best at blocking? Does it mean we are giving up on Wilson, Scanlan, McHugh, XYB? Does it mean we are confident in each new recruiting class so that we can burn shirts more easily? I don't have the answers as I'm legitimately stumped as to why we would bun 4 shirts of true freshman wr. Not saying it wouldn't be a good thing, it's just hard to come to any conclusions about burning Green's or Fessler's shirt this early without seeing them in action. Again, not talking about Nagel and Roberts, those two are easily understood. Roberts will see a lot more touches than people think.

Didn't ask. The concept was shocking enough to me. I just didn't ask any more than that.
Based on his size and measurables, SB is really the only position where he would seem to fit. Also, it's likely that as he watched NU games over the past three years, he concentrated most on the superback.

That makes sense, given the loss of Taylor for the season.

Dan Vitale would be a GREAT short yardage back on this team. He's massive and played RB in HS. I don't know why he doesn't get more carries up the middle on third and short, then again, I'm a cube rat, not a B1G offensive coordinator

I said this in another thread a few weeks ago, but I'm going to go on record again. I am predicting that by the end of his career, Nagel will be in the top five all time at NU in receptions. The kid is an absolute perfect fit for the NU offense and should have a good QB throwing to him throughout his NU career.

Tonight, in the Big 10 West preview, DiNardo picked Nagel as one of the 3 players who will emerge this season as big names. Very complementary of his skill and fit with the NU offense. They said he is ahead of where Mike Dudek was at this time last season. If so, Wow!

From my perspective DiNardo rarely has that kind of praise for anything NU sothat seems exciting.
