Both San Diego State and UC San Diego have both their men and women basketball teams in the Big Dance. This is the first year UCSD teams are eligible. SDSU got clobbered by NC yesterday. The Aztecs had a long trip across country and had little rest. NC played hard like they had something to prove.

UCSD has a tough game tomorrow against Michigan and their 2 seven foot giants. UCSD has a good team and might make it close if they are able to shoot threes for the upset. They are at a disadvantage against Michigan’s giants. UCSD women are very good as well. Making the leap to D1 has been a dream for the school and has been a long time coming.

Not all was bright and sunny in San Diego as the USD Toreros, Jim Harboughs old school, finished dead last in the West Coast Conference..at 6-27 . You would think a campus visit would get them anyone they wanted.

My UC San Diego Tritons had a great 2nd half to make it a game in the 2nd half. UM was lucky to have escaped with a win- they looked very mediocre in this game. I enjoyed the Tritons comeback after being down by 14 at the half. UCSD had a great season. Their future looks bright as a new DI program moving up from
D3 and the DII. Go Tritons!

Regarding USD- their AD just fired their head basketball coach, they might go after the UCSD head coach. He will get looks from other schools though UCSD has been good to him during his career there.

“USD fires basketball coach Sam Scholl after four seasons.Toreros won 21 games in his first season but tailed off last three years.”

USD has a scenic campus and has pretty nice facilities like the “Slim Gym” (donations from Jenny Craig led to the gym’s construction). Worth visiting for a walk around campus and also the UCSD campus has the Stuart collection of outdoor art worth seeing.

Michigan was playing stupid. Taking nothing but threes for a while and playing miserable jumping at everything. Plus terrible from the line. Did not see the first half but in the 2nd half they deserved to lose

The Tritons were nervous at the start and got behind 10-0. Michigan did not look good in this game. The Tritons had a real shot to win with their 2nd half comeback. It will be interesting to see which UM team will show up against Texas A&M. I was surprised they weren’t able to used their 2 seven foot players more effectively against UCSD.

Bad matchup

I love how things change and adapt in football and basketball. So switch everywhere became a thing to try and stop teams that ran 4 or 5 out, The idea was to stop 3 point shooters...as a result lots of times smaller guys got matched up on bigger guys down low and lo and behold lots of smaller players evolved into better defensive players down low...also after they got chased off the 3 point line. you started to see the high pick and roll....and teams would guard the big and shadow him with the other guy forcing the guard to take it to the hoop....and you saw them develop or bring back that little stop turn fadaway in the lane or the floater....NU has done really well with that...Boo and Mac....Now you are seeming teams try and get guys that can guard all 5 spots effectively by their size and mobility. What's next? UCSD had a couple guys pretty skilled at that little turnaround fadaway......I hear BUddy Holly in the background.

Michigan was only favored by 1.5?
That tells you that UC San Diego was deliberately seeded worse than they deserved.
In other words, given a more difficult opponent than they deserved in round 1.
The NCAA really doesn't like the teams from "other conferences."

I agree. I think UCSD got screwed by this first round matchup with Michigan and deserved to play a lower seed. The UM 3 pointer at the end of the first half turned out to be key for the Michigan win. The Tritons offense froze at the start but came to life in the 2nd half. I wonder if there will be any interest by other programs to look at the Tritons hc- Eric Olen is Big West coach of the year two years in a row. He should be under consideration by other programs though he would probably stay at UCSD.

It might just be my own limited exposure to other college basketball teams, but one thing I've noticed a dramatic increase in the last couple of years is the little push up 'floater' shot off the dribble.
