Not sure what we have. Sure about what we don’t have. Enough quality guards. Scoring. Players for next year.

Time to play for next year and if we get lucky, maybe get an NIT or lower tourney. And go play it.

I no longer hope to see Ash or Gaines except garbage time, only ahead of walkons. I want to see Falzon if ever healthy to determine whether to ask back. Otherwise, I would prefer playing:

Pardon - he deserves it
Law - for 25 min or until he fouls out
Kopp - get him experience, about 20+ min worth
Turner - about 25 minutes
Greer - another 25 min guy

Nance and Benson should see 20+ min a game
Taylor to spell Greer and Turner. Falzon if possible.

No more Ash, minimal Gaines. And get back to recruiting. We need two or three more guys.

Completely accurate. I never want to be critical but I think ash gained and Falzon are misses at the high major D1 level.

At the same time we do need these high quality frosh to step up this year.

Why isn’t Taylor playing 25 minutes? You have Greer and Taylor reversed. His is the best shooter on the team. Law and Pardon will play 30 minutes. Gaines will play at least 15 due to needing someone who can play D.

Not playing for this year. Prefer experience for Greer. Taylor is gone at end of season.

This is BS. Remember Akron in football?? No? Remember how happy we were about our athleticism before yesterday? No?

I remember MSU losing to NU by 20, in 1979. State couldn't hit the broad side of a barn, didn't defend, and couldn't run their break. They were awful. It was their last loss of the season.

One bad day does not determine a season. Period.

No, but if you have watched the games then you know that this is not one bad game. We knew we had ball handling issues and we are seeing game long presses. We thought Ash had progressed, he has not. We hoped Gaines has added to his game, he has not.

The team has not shot well yet - against low level teams. FSU is not a good team. So we can’t score and our defense hasn’t emulated the FB D in terms of an ability to cover the short comings on O.

We have a short roster in which even the walkons are hurt. Of the 12 schollies we awarded, only 10 are expected to play. Within those, 3 are frosh, one has never shown to be a B1G caliber player and one is one dimensional, at best - that’s half, or the equivalent of the whole bench.

Next year, maybe we can return 3 seasoned highly regarded sophomores and a senior that transferred in, perhaps our big guy will have finally logged enough minutes to turn on the lightbulb. And we will add 5-6 new faces and try again. Only difference, instead of just Law and Pardon, hopefully we will have experienced talent in Nance, Kopp and Greer to build around. We know a Nance like frosh in Beran arrives. Buie - what ever he compares to joins the fray. Probably 1-2 Taylor like transfers. Young is the turner like guy w a year in the system. Who knows. World beaters? Probably not, building blocks? Maybe - so let the rebuilding begin and the young guys some experience.

So you are throwing the towel in after 5 games? A youth movement before we have even got to the conference schedule? If I was Pardon or Law I would strangle CCC if he didn’t play his best players to win THIS year. Taylor clearly is good enough to play a lot of minutes. Greer may be great at some point, but you play to win games now. I like Greer and our freshman, but they shouldn’t be prioritized yet as this season is young. Play to Win.

He's good at throwing in the towel.-- it is why I now own his screenname in football...

For the record, I was probably less optimistic than Bob coming into this season about out chances to return to the NCAA’s for the very reasons a lot of these posters are belly aching. However, I find the whipsawing back and forth on if we are good or not is hilarious after only 5 games. We have some big flaws right now, but who is to say they can’t be mitigated. The team is athletic enough to fix their defense. I saw more NU guys dunk today in the first half than we normally saw in an entire season in some of the CBC days. This is still residue from still being pissed about last year. I am amazed on how much more traffic hits these boards when things aren’t going perfectly. Some people expect us to be Alabama in football and Kentucky in basketball. It takes time for a good program to become a great one.

It's pretty much limited to a few posters who basically post the same nonsense on the football board. They hyperpost incessantly so it SEEMS like more, but it is really less than 5 people. Some do it just to troll to see if they can get a rise out of other posters by posting such outrageous stuff that there is no way they could believe what they post themselves. Others just hate the coaches or certain players, such as CT in football.

Huh. Aaron Falzon started 29 of 32 games his true Freshman year, averaged almost 25 minutes a game, and was second on the team in 3's made. A team that had everyones favorite 3 point specialist Nate Taphorn on it. He then missed a full season with injury, and probably wasn't fully recovered last year.

Compare Aaron's first year to Kopp or Nance.....so far I'd say Aaron is ahead of those guys, albeit with a statistically insignificant sample size. Nance will probably become an exellent B1G player. But if he gets hurt next year and never reaches his potential, will we hear him called a "recruiting failure"?

Just hate it when players are criticized when they have injury problems. It's a complete lack of respect.

Sorry but the past is the past. The school has paid for his education and he hasn’t delivered for the team due to his body failing him. I’m sure he’s a good student and a good teammate but if we are measuring him by his playing impact he has failed due to health reasons.

Well I think both sides are silly. You are overly optimistic and they think the world is exploding. Isn’t it more likely that we are a mediocre team due to an unbalanced roster and that we will be pretty good in a year or two? Do you think we are an NCAA tournament team?

I don’t think we are as bad as Bob says or as good as you think.

Great post! You NEVER, EVER throw in the towel. A coach OWES it to players to coach for a win every time on the floor.

We just don't know is the most accurate answer.

Guards are huge in college basketball....the best teams have excellent guard play. Reason to worry.

However, experience is hugely important at the college level as well and NU has that in droves. Reason to be optimistic.

NU is starting three guys who weren't in the program last year....sort of...AJ sat out. And has two other meaningful contributors who are frosh.

This team is a couple weeks into playing games together for the first time. The experience could trump the thinness at guard, they could gel and go on a run in conference. This team has more than enough talent to do that.

Or, they could never quite come together...never quite gel....never quite figure out how to figure out the guard play.

Only five or six game into it and it's impossible to know.

Talent, which has always been the problem at NU, is not the issue.

I would have responded to the post directed at me, but this was better than anything I could have written. Well done!

The fundamental problem is that Collins had three straight recruiting classes that failed to pan out. After his first, strong class, the next three produced seven players: two transferred, one is always hurt, and only one of the remaining four (Pardon) is a consistently good Big Ten starter. (Maybe Gaines will take a step forward, or Benson will finally establish himself, but they haven't yet.) He's tried to patch the holes with transfers but that's never a panacea - there's a big developmental hole in the roster and the only thing that will fill it is an infusion of young talent.

This year is going to be rough. Next year should be better as this year's freshmen develop and the subsequent class comes in, though replacing Law and Pardon is going to be a bear. But it might take until the year after that to get back to the NCAAs.

Before Pardon wastes energy strangling anyone, he can play 40 minutes of defense. Lead by example. And Law can learn, for the first time in his career, to stop whining to the refs and simply avoid the offensive fouls.

Maybe they catch lightening in a bottle. But I don’t think Ash is in that bottle. And Gaines only is in the bottle for limited minutes.

Greer - Turner - Kopp or Nance - Law - Pardon

Kopp or Nance and Benson with some Gaines

That’s it. Win what you can. And get the returners some bigtime experience.

The crappin' on Falzon makes me nuts.

Hopefully he's back in the next couple of weeks and is a steely-eyed assassin.

You think we are an NCAA team? It’s not like it’s impossible to know. It’s hard to forecast an NCAA appearance without much better shooting and defense. That’s kind of a given.

Did I mention you specifically in the post? But sensitivd, aren't we? And what does my posting have to do with your posting exactly? Nice deflectivity and defensiveness, all in one post, though!

Gets my vote. Next MJ? I could get behind that too.

Better question, do you expect that to be the case?

Not at all. I was thinking that you are the last person, next to wrassler, to talk about hyperposting. Still waiting for that definition. I’ll hang up and listen to the crickets, or weird wishy washy non-responsive response.

I think I’m within the rules. Thanks. Remember my idea about: before complaining, ask yourself when you last violated a rule. If you remember the occasion, just keep quiet.

Rule about hyper posting.

I think its possible. But it's all mental.

I'd be curious what LoyolaCat has to say about Taylor....if he's seeing the same look in his eyes as last year. I think that's key.

Posting repeatedly about the same topics.

I think that was a different rule. I would think hyperposting relates to the volume of posts. No?

I didn't say hyperposting was in the board rules, only stated that certain people hyperpost here. Here are two related rules, though:

  1. No repetitive negative posting. What makes a repetitive post? If you come to the forum and consistently say the exact same thing about the exact same topic day in and day out, that is being repetitive. Be sure to understand that no one is saying that you can not be critical. But this site will not be overrun by the same people coming on the site day after day saying the same negative things.
  1. No dominating the conversation. Do not dominate the conversation, whether it is a single thread, or the overall conversation on the board for the day. A successful message board community involves give and take. If one poster contributes too much, to the point of disrupting the community, he or she may be banned.

I'm sorry to interrupt the discussion of board rules and minutes of the meeting.

The lineups with more than one of either Taylor, Turner, Gaines, Greer or Ash are just painful. Only two of those five, please.

Excuse me for repeating, but this is just an undersized team also. Thankfully it's being addressed. Nance and Kopp offer some size, but they just don't know how to use it right now.

And before anyone says it, yes, I didn't mention Benson.

That leaves you with Law who's already doing everything a la Bugs Bunny and Pardon.

Well, that was a great, albeit stressful, win over a legit Power 5 team. Maybe I was a bit trigger happy to write off the season to rebuild. That said, things I have learned since I started this thread:

- I still want Ash sitting next to Hall and Malnati. All those minutes to Greer. Get him some experience. Plus, with Law always in foul trouble, Taylor and Turner getting gassed, and some really ugly stretches in the second half, throw Greer in for a little change of pace.
- yup, nobody is going to press us. Hey Mike, how did that little thing go with the coach, the player, the drug test? I have another wager: how about the number of teams that press us this year? Not many pressing teams in the B1G. Care to back up your humor at my expense with some screen name action?
- Kopp and Nance aren’t ready. Man, it would have been great to redshirt them. But, since we can’t, let’s get them more involved. How about some more set plays that get them in the paint? Pick and roll anyone?

I’m really surprised that this team came out and performed so well tonight. All the travel. Classwork to make up. This could have been mailed in and they showed up and played. I’m can’t wait for Saturday.

the problem withe pic in roll is having an adequate ball handler and passer to read that play. i don't think NU personal can do that well

I am increasingly impressed with how AJ and Law handle the ball and run the offense. And I concede that there were 15 TO's yesterday. I very much like the unselfishness.

Think it's good for Law, if he can maintain close to this level of scoring, and show 2 guard capability, for his chance to get serious attention at the next level.

Me: Collins says that teams won't press us quite like Fresno State and LaSalle did,
XBob: Yup, nobody is going to press us...
Me: lol wut?

No one said teams wouldn't press us at all, have no idea where you got that from.

Did you see all those plays Pardon took off on defense those last two games and all the whining Law did? Neither did I. #xbobhottakes

Time to dig in archives. Pretty sure you said teams that aren’t pressing teams won’t press. Is GT a pressing team?

How about this - no hindsight - tell me now - is IU a pressing team?

Your right, Pardon has not taken any plays off on D. Law never complains about a call / no call.

I sometimes wonder if we are watching the same team. Then I realize I don’t really care.

Hi Va! Nice to see you are still stalking and still have nothing of value to add the discussions.
