I just got done with post-practice interviews at Nicolet. I will post the Fitz video in a little while and am going to write about Shane Mertz and his comeback from an unbelievably long list of injuries. But here are some notes in the meantime:
- There is a lot of shuffling going on with the offensive line. Mertz has been moved to guard and is running with the 1s right now (Matt Frazier is out this spring, remember). Geoff Mogus, who started at guard last season is at left tackle. Cushing is trying to get the best five out there, regardless of positions, which has opened up a lot of opportunities.
- Mertz is a great interview, a very excitable and articulate kid. He is a fifth year senior but really more like a sophomore in terms of reps. He's embraced the move to guard and is thrilled to be out there and healthy.
- The offensive line is focused on being nasty and establishing themselves as the toughest unit on the team. Part of that is a new term: choppurtunities. If there is an opportunity to chop a guy, they take it.
- Practices are closed to the media, but I now have had three people tell me the following about the QBs: Thorson looks great, the light has come on for Alviti, and Oliver looks like the odd man out. Two of them said that if the Cats played this week, Alviti would probably start but that Thorson may have the job by fall. They expect those two guys to battle for the No. 1 job. Remember, this is all hearsay, but they are sources whose opinion I trust. When Fitz was asked today, he said all three were working hard and making both good plays and mistakes. Is he considering a two-QB system? Maybe three, he said. (Just to clarify, that was clearly a joke.)
More to come.
