Officiating in this game

There's no way a ref should be blowing his whistle while the ball is bouncing around the rim unless he is calling a foul.
He didn't call a foul, so what the hell is he doing?
And I don't believe the ref blew his whistle before Barnhizer scored, so that basket should have counted.
And the Big dude on PSU definitely smacked the rim while the ball was partly in the cylinder, so the original shot should have counted.

Blatant theft or total incompetence.

One thing to mess up the actual live play but then to botch the review in MULTIPLE ways.

Were those Walton losses all during away games? I mean we were 2 and 8 on the road, correct? Not sure the 2-4 means as much if they were all road games.
2-1 at home, 0-3 on the road. Wins over Purdue in OT and Minnesota, losses to Iowa by 7, at Minnesota in OT, at Rutgers by 3 in the game when Langborg was ludicrously ejected, and at Nebraska by 6.

Hence they called it an inadvertant whistle. Can't it be both?

Thanks. As well as we were playing home and away last year, a little suspicious but you gotta know who was making the calls

Looked to me like Barnhizer still had the ball in his hands when the whistle was blown.

Have not watched it yet but if that is the case then we lose because play stops right then. It ball has left his hand basket should count. Sucks but that is how it has to be because once the whistle blows play stops on both sides

Unless they should have called a goaltend for the PSU player touching the rim.

Okay I watched the video. Barnhizer had his putback up before the whistle blew.
Its obvious.
I have looked at it several times and very close but looks like it either just was or just was not off his hand when I heard whistle. Really hard to tell and on the slow motion could not hear whistle . Was whistle blown prematurely? Yes but once blown....

Not sure who this guy is but doesn’t look like NU affiliated. Replies from a lot of non NU fans incredulous about the officiating…except the PSU fans.

He’s a national hoops guy who has been a big Collins advocate. I think he does NCAA tournament sideline reporting.

Chris Collins. The Pioneer.

It comes from a place of admiration, not fandom.

Everyone knows NU got screwed.

Ball was not in cylinder so it wouldn't be unless the movement of the rim would have made a difference. The officiating of the whole game was bad but once you got to this point not much you can do.

And if we had gotten into OT, almost everyone had 4 fouls. Barnhizer, Berry, Mullins, Leach, and Chello, So it would have been really tough in OT to keep tha team on the floor. But still we should have had the opportunity

But what if the shot is blocked before the rim is touched?
The ball has to still get into the cylinder Which I don't think Leach's ball did. If it was on downward trajectory when it was blocked then goaltending but they ruled that it was not. Sure looked like the earlier one was however

Honestly I expected if we'd tied it in regulation that the game would've ended with Baldwin at the FT line, where he'd spent the rest of the game.

there was another goaltender non call a few minutes before. Anyone remember the exact time mark of that?

Not sure what you guys are watching. Ball is out of his hand. 6:33 of the video above.
Just use the pause button until the ball leaves his hand.
If you haven't heard a whistle yet, then the shot was up.

At the very least the ball is leaving his hand - and wiping out a shot attempt simultaneous with an inadvertent whistle is totally idiotic.
Nobody on the court was affected by the whistle. The shot went up and THEN everybody stopped - because they heard a whistle.

I have tried it several times and just really really close and unfortunately when you get to that point the rules are what they are and it just really worked against us

It was when the game was tied at 75. Was a high momentum swing especially after they gave the NBA continuation to the PSU player at the other end.
Too bad that we did not have anything close to that on Barnhizers 3 pt shot at the buzzer in another game (was it IA or Butler) and they called the foul but waived off the shot, Would have tied the game and given him an and 1

Definitely the ball was released from barnhizer hands when whistle had gone off and it was much less time than the 6.7. Overall the review which they spent minutes on makes little sense.

If the refs wanted to get nit-picky while reviewing they could have easily called PSU #14 for a second goaltending or basket interference, as his hand smacks the rim while the ball is in the cylinder

The whistle first blew at 6.1 and the ball is out of Barnhizer's hand.

(If the images didn't load they are here: https://postimg.cc/gallery/WZ6spt3 )

This really is nasty work by the refs, going to great lengths with a five minute review to try to take away Barnhizer's basket when a) it was on the scoreboard, and b) they know full well the whistle didn't affect that basket. The whistle was no earlier than 6.1, and yet they tried to cover their tracks more with the explanation of going back to the point in time when the referee "thought the goaltending occurred"... it's just atrocious referee work all around.

This crew honestly was so poor and so one-sided the entire game, they should never officiate in the Big Ten again. If there is no discipline, then we have confirmation the Big Ten doesn't give a sh*t about fairness, officiating quality, or frankly have any respect for NU... sad for a founding member since 1896, getting absolutely disrespected 129 years later. What a farce.

Thanks for confirming what I thought I saw as well. An overall total joke by the officials to mess up multiple facets of the review process.

The Big Ten issued a statement that you can touch the rim as long as the ball isn't "in the basket" or "in contact with the rim."

I found the rulebook...

Section 15. Basket Interference and Goaltending
Art. 1. It is a violation to commit basket interference or goaltending.
Art. 2. Basket interference.

a. Basket interference occurs when a player:

1. Touches the ball or any part of the basket while the ball is on or within the basket. If the touching of the basket involves contact with the net only, the official must determine if the touching had any effect on the ball which would rise to the level of basket interference;
2. Touches the ball while any part of it is within the cylinder that has the ring as its lower base;
3. Reaches through the basket from below and touches the ball before it enters the cylinder;
4. Pulls down a movable ring so that it contacts the ball before the ring returns to its original position; and
5. Causes the basket or backboard to vibrate when the ball is on or within the basket or the backboard and/or is on or in the cylinder.

b. The cylinder is the imaginary geometric figure that has the ring as its base and is formed by the upward extension of that ring.
c. The ball shall be considered to be within the basket when any part of the ball is below the cylinder and the level of the ring

That sequence at the end was the epitome of a catch 22.

The whistle blew because it was goaltending.

Because there was goaltending, the put back does not count.

But we have to review the goaltending to make sure it was the correct call.

As it turns out, it was not a goaltend.

But because the whistle made the play dead, the put back does not count.

So there is no goaltending, there is no put back, and no basket for the cats.

Have a nice day.

I naively expected a make-up call on the inbound. Instead a no-call when Nicholson was pushed. How silly of me.

I think the make-up call was to call goaltending the 2nd time (when it didn't happen).
Whichever ref blew his whistle was trying to make up for the first blown call.
While the ball was being put into the basket.

If the refs realize they can fix games by blowing their whistle "inadvertently" when a guy is about to score, all hell will break loose.
That needs to be fixed immediately. Any field goal attempt during an inadvertent or erroneous whistle must be counted if it goes in. Seems obvious, but thats not the rule. The current rule is idiotic.
And we lost because of it.

Make goaltending non-reviewable, at least in the final minutes.

  • Where can one see this Big Ten statement you are referencing, PurpleWhiteBoy?

  • This is where it's a judgment call: "Basket interference occurs when a player... Causes the basket or backboard to vibrate when the ball is... in the cylinder"... both Penn State players hit the rim / backboard, and particularly given the way the rim was contacted by #14 (he hits the rim straight on and then his hand slides along the front side of the rim to the left) and the ball being in the cylinder at that time, the refs could have made that judgment call (which would have matched the result that was actually the fair result -- no one can say with a straight face the whistle at 6.1 actually affected the result of the play)

This happens regularly because... say it with me... Northwestern men's basketball is not a glamor program. Pundits pick it yearly to finish last in the conference, so there are no repercussions when they get screwed.
