Thanks for posting this. It is the only sporting race, outside of the marathon, which commemorates an actual event. Because there is no score and it takes a loooooonnnnnng time to finish, it doesn't garner the respect and fan following of the "right now" sports fans.
 
There is no snow in town, nor anywhere near it. Didn't they rail a bunch in to hold the ceremonial start?

Correct. The snow you see was brought by train some 300 miles from Fairbanks, Alaska. We actually did get about two inches of snow just before the Iditarod began, but it wasn't enough to make the trails useable.
 
Where is the actual start of contiguous racing?

This year the contiguous race began a few hours ago from Willow, Alaska which is 77 miles north of Anchorage. From there the teams will follow the "Northern Route" which heads toward McGrath and then on to the eastern coast of Alaska until Nome is reached some 1,000 miles distant from Willow.
