That’s a massive tree. A few years ago at homecoming weekend there was a crew cutting down a very big and probably near dead tree right at the corner of Deering Meadow by Foster. Looking at the picture I wonder if the roots were rotted? Important to be proactive about unhealthy trees in areas like this where there is a lot of foot traffic. Last fall I asked my neighbor or to help me cut down a ~30 foot tall dead tree by my driveway. He just pushed on the trunk really hard and it started to come down. We pushed together and it basically broke off at the ground where the roots were rotted.

We’ve had very high winds here along the coast in San Diego. On my way to the UCSD campus this morning along Torrey Pines Road there were multiple trees (pines and eucalyptus) blown down that were being cut up by work crews. Eucalyptus trees have been especially deadly in San Diego County over the decades. They were originally brought over from Australia to be grown to be used for railroad ties but were found not to be useful for that purpose.
