OT: Maryland to fire Randy Edsall?

Curious if those rumored plans will change if The Terps beat the Buckeyes Saturday. Stranger things have happened.

Really bad leak if this is true at all. Firing a coach midseason is a drastic measure. Saying you're going to do it AFTER an upcoming game is really unfair to all involved.

Edsall had a pretty good machine running at Uconn. He's making 2 million now, but was making 1.7 at Uconn. I didn't get the move then... not that I'm one to scoff at 300,000. I guess the potential salary boost at Maryland is a lot higher after a few good seasons while he might have been maxed at Uconn.

Bottom line is lots of schools have unrealistic expectations. If you become entrenched at a school, don't go chasing "bigger and better," you'll be on your way out soon.

So maybe the Twerps will re-hire Vanderlinden? Maryland is a total mess.

They made a bowl game last year. Maybe the guy deserves a break. Don't care much one way or the other, of course.

And UConn has totally fallen apart since he's left too. We'll see if Diaco works out, but maybe UConn will try to get him back.

Statement from Maryland spokesman: "Randy Edsall is our head football coach and he'll be on the sidelines Saturday against Ohio State."

Whew, I'm sure he's glad there is nothing to this rumor!

Let's go Terps! Few things would be funnier than seeing Edsall win and the administration having to keep him around.

I always thought Edsall jumped ship because he had some insider information on UMD rising to the Big Ten while UConn would sink with the AAC. They were "equal" programs to the naked eye...until you consider that.

Joe Schad now confirming. Still weird how it's going down.

I live in Maryland. Actually has been fairly quiet on Edsall in the local press but I am sure that the supporters are furious. Kevin Plank, owner of Under Armour, is a former Maryland player and big time contributor. I suspect the article is accurate. As far as I can tell no one loves Edsall but were willing to give him a chance. This year has been disastrous and from all appearances he has lost the team.

I am a Big Ten fan but have supported Maryland and their athletic programs for a long time. A lot of the posters on this board are unbelievably arrogant and clueless on Maryland's athletic history and record of success. Mixed in football but they have a national football championship on their resume - better than most teams in the Big Ten can claim. They handled the Big Ten just fine their first year in the league.

Having said all that I'd like to see Edsall go - sooner the better. They could do worst than Vanderlinden but pretty unlikely. Doubt they want a retread.

The correct solution, of course, is to kick Rutgers and MD out of the BT and admit to Delany's Folly. The entire basis for admitting these two sub-par schools with sub-par sports programs was basic cable. But basic cable will soon be a thing of the past, replaced by ala carte programming. At that point, there is NO good reason for these two horrible, horrible programs to be in our conference, so we should punt them to the curb now, and get ourselves AHEAD of the curve, instead of behind it as we are now with these two jokes.

Good post. I agree about the arrogance and cluelessness coming from NU fans, too. Claiming UMD is a "subpar" school for the Big Ten with subpar athletics is just idiocy. Talk about the pot calling the kettle black! When I worked for the University of Maryland, I often defended NU from criticism over their horrible athletics. I don't know why I did because NU's facilities and teams when I was there were horribly neglected compared to UMD facilities. Fans here may confuse MD AD's economic problems stemming from an aggressive athletic facilities upgrade campaign (they actually happen at other schools), with the quality of their athletic program.

That said, I have to wonder about their AD decision making. IMO, Maryland has been too quick to fire their football coaches. Vanderlinden should have received an additional year to get to a bowl game. Friedgen fired after a 9-4 season? Why? Oh, that was to get the guy they're firing today.

I totally agree. Maryland and Rutgers should be replaced by Notre Dame and Texas. If this happened and the Texas program rebounds, the Big 10 would be the equal of the SEC

Maryland is a solid basketball school, which certainly can't be said for the 'Cats. I don't think they bring much to the table for football but they're not bad.

Rutgers, on the other hand, I would love to kick out.

The funniest part is that in their only complete B1G FB season, both schools did relatively well, ending 3rd and 4th (with conference records about .500) in their 7-team division...basically in the middle of the pack...and both played in bowl games against P5 schools...RU even won. Based on that very limited sample size there is no basis whatsoever to talk about those schools not being worthy of the B1G....They both certainly had a better season than NU's....go figure!

Of course they probably will have worse B1G campaigns...then again, they may also get much better...both as unchallenged flagship schools of relatively populous states are in a good position to become major FB programs (especially with help from the B1G brand)....If the IOA's, the NU's, the Duke's, the KSU's of the world can go from doormat to respectable, even championship programs, there is no reason at all for two unchallenged flagship schools from moderately populous states not to be able to progress from their relative mediocrity to solidness or even greatness....no reason whatsoever.

I would take Florida and Texas in a heartbeat over Maryland and Rutgers. Easier said than done, though.

Both athletic departments are riddled with scandal and bad actors. We are a founding member. They are newbie interlopers. There's a difference. Boot em both out!

He's assembled a few good recruiting classes, but the performance on the field has been awful.

He had a decent team last year, but lost a lot of the key pieces. There is some talent in the pipeline, so it would be strange to fire him at this point, especially after he was given a three-year extension.
