OT: Texas AD Steve Patterson fired after two years with Longhorns

Mack was "out" 2 years ago. Charlie Strong is the current HC and I suspect his AD getting canned by a new pres got his attention. Texas needs to win now. But, continued QB problems continue to drag down the Longhorns.

The most impressive item of note at the Notre Dame game for Texas was the shot of approximately 20 jets nicely arranged at the South Bend airport --- oh, the money they have at Texas. Plenty of PO'd folks after that prime time show !!

I meant, will UT rehire Mack, now as AD? Fact is, the main job of the AD is to raise money and Mack should be good at it.

I think NJ was asking would Mack be asked to come back as AD.

Since fundraising and schmoozing is a big part of the job and Brown excells at that, I wouldn't discount the possibility at all.

I don't think you can hire Mack Brown. You have Charlie Strong as the coach... you know the guy you fired Mack Brown to hire. I think there would be far too much tension.

This article talks about how Pederson was all about money money money money money. No wonder he got tossed!

Sally Lehr, one of 158 members of Texas’ class of 1964 back on campus for their 50th reunion last September, asked athletic director Steve Patterson why he wanted to charge them $25 per person to go stand on the football field at Darrell K Royal-Texas Memorial Stadium.

Just to relive some memories.

“He said it was expensive to allow people on the field. They had to turn on the lights. They had to have people leading the tour and a groundskeeper,” Lehr recalled. “He said if athletics had to pay for all of that, they might have to cut the donation they made to the UT library.

“I was stunned by his arrogance and avarice,” added Lehr, whose stepfather was Jones Ramsey, Texas’ sports information director from 1961-83.

“I was raised in a household where you did everything you could to promote the Longhorns any way that you could. I was dumbfounded he thought that was a good public relations move - to charge $25 for people to step on the football field.

“He has turned the Horns ‘brand’ into a commodity to be sold.”

And now they're going to get spanked by Cal on Saturday. Goff's going to hang 40 on the 'Horns.

Strong is probably a goner since the guy who hired him was sacked.

The collective arses of Longhorn nation must be on fire seeing what has gone on at Baylor and TCU of late.

Don't forget about the Aggies. Their success burns Longhorn fans the most. Texas A&M is pretty darned good this year, like potential National Championship good. And as a side note, they scored 49 points in the first half on Saturday against Ball State, our opponent next week.

The money might be a little edgy to begin with right now as oil prices remain in the dumper. You can't get mad at the free market so you might as well take it out on your college football team.

With degrees from both NU and UT, I follow UT football quite closely. Plus, I'm a native Texan. No surprise Patterson got the axe, as his people skills left a lot to be desired. His efforts to increase athletic department revenue remind me of the recent Michigan AD who tried to commercialize even further the UM brand, and got himself fired in the process.

A few thoughts on some of the other comments. Thankfully, Texas athletics is not the dumpster fire that is Illinois. No way Mack Brown comes back as AD. While he did still have some support when he left, it wasn't enough to keep him around. Since then, it's become even more apparent how bare he left the cupboard. Just this past week, however, he was quoted as saying had no responsibility for the current state of affairs. Basically, he's still in denial. Jury is still out on Charlie Strong. I don't expect him to have a very long leash, but at least he appears to have the culture turned around. He needs to do something this year to give Longhorn faithful hope that truly better times are on the way. Better times are not just a winning record, it's being competitive for National Championships. It will be hard to put the TAMU, TCU and Baylor genies back in the bottle, people now realize they can go to those schools and compete for NCs. Texas lost its death grip on State of Texas recruiting by basically getting lazy and not doing the hard work necessary to identify the really good football players, regardless of star ranking. Strong's first real class are freshmen this year and they seem pretty good. Right now he has 8 freshman on the two deep. I think he has this year and likely the next to instill the hope necessary to stay around longer.

Well, enough about UT. Let's go win on the road this week. I'm always much more excited about the Cats than the Longhorns, but this year even more so. Go Cats!

The problems with jobs like Texas is that a coach just cannot get the time needed to get things right....barring hiring a coach who is just a flat out rock star success at a previous spot (Urban, Saban, Carroll, maybe Harbaugh) most anyone else who gets the job is going to be on a complete short leash because of the big bucks alums. Strong for instance may be completely the right guy for the job but he may be gone before he even gets a chance to show results. Mack Brown's recruiting classes were all top notch on paper but maybe just maybe those classes were over-rated by the people rating them. Really do not think you can ever judge a coach until at least three years in but nowadays schools like Texas expect it to change over night. that is why for guys like Strong taking a job like Texas can be a complete meat grinder, at Louisville he was king at UT he plays the fool.

Yeah. I wasn't sure if the upstart programs were a more bitter pill than the longtime in-state rival finding its way in the SEC-THE PREMIER CONFERENCE IN THE FOOTBALL UNIVERSE WITH ITS SPEED, ATHLETES, AND CHEERLEADERS!!!! (cough). aTm had its share of rough waters lately, but seems to be heading in the right direction.

Tennessee tried it when they had Phil Fulmer in the Athletic Department (not AD) as a fund-raiser while his replacement was HC. It was not great.

Charlie Strong is history. Just playing out the string. Texas should be able to recruit in a phone booth. Not being competitive in all their games - they don't necessarily have to win - and looking clueless is a condemnation of the coaching staff. The Notre Dame game was a debacle as well as their play in 2014.

Should have hired Luck (also should have offered the younger Luck a schollie) - who may just get his chance this time around.

Strong looked like an excellent candidate. Especially with x's and o's. He did a lot with a little at Louisville and had that program riding high. Maybe a lot of it was Bridgewater but the few times that I watched them play, they looked solid.
