Week 5 Snaps and brief grade comments for the offense. I’m focusing mostly on snaps on both sides this week for reasons previously stated, and also because grades have a broad trend that mostly holds true. I’ll comment on grades where they defy this trend, but it’s pretty consistent. Snaps are definitely a little interesting this week.
On grades, remember the basis of PFF grades: it doesn’t adjust for competition or conditions in any way. In other words, PFF doesn’t care the game was played in a hurricane, and as such, generally views NU’s offense as having played very badly and NU’s defense as quite well. As a result, NU’s offensive players have nearly uniformly declined a little bit across the board from last week. The only major exception to this is Hilinski, who declined more significantly from his already low place. As such, it’s always up to the reader to apply your version of context to the grade figures.
NU had 65 offensive snaps and came out looking to run 25 times and looking to pass 40 times.
Hilinski played all 65 offensive snaps again.
WR – 150 snaps, 2.46 per play, basically in line with usage all year, albeit on the low side. WR per snap has been between 2.44 and 2.65 all year. NU didn’t go all that heavy in the rain in terms of personnel.
Washington – 56 snaps, ran 36/39 pass play routes.
Navarro – 59 snaps.
Gill – 27 snaps, running routes 21 times
Kirtz – 7 snaps. Kirtz falls below Gill in usage for the first time
Niro – 7 Snaps
GHP – 2 snaps. He’s the only non-Malik NU receiever who grades okay, but he doesn’t play much. He also played mostly in non-con, so that could have a distorting effect on his ability.
Bacon – 2 snaps
PFF also says Calvin Johnson was in on kick coverage teams a couple times, appearing on the sheet for the first time, but didn’t take any offensive snaps yet.
RB – 78 snaps, 1.2 per play. This is the high point for the season, but not by a lot, with most games around 1.1 per play. It adds up to maybe 5-6 more 2 back set snaps this week.
Hull – 51 snaps, including 29 routes run. Hull followed the trend like the rest of the offense dipping a little but has done so every week since Duke and is now down to the upper 60’s from his time early in the year much higher. Still graded as a great receiver though, just not as great as before.
Porter – 19 snaps.
Tyus – 8 snaps.
Clair DNP
TE – 85 snaps, 1.31 per play, only very slightly above average for NU but not even close to the yearly high.
Gordon – 41 snaps
Lang – 35 snaps
Mangieri – 2 snaps
PFF thinks Duke Olges got out there for 6 snaps run blocking, not sure if this is another Welcing v Picozzi number swap situation or what. As of now I’m including him in the TE numbers above.
O Line
From left to right, Skoronski, Priebe, Schmidt, Picozzi, and Wiederkehr all played every snap. Dom D’Antonio got out there run blocking on 3 snaps.
