Right decision, although there would be no wrong decision. Playing in one of the other 2 tournaments would prove nothing, and the let down the players seemed to feel after the Michigan loss just told me it was time to close the book on 2016. Collins talks about playing meaningful games in March and neither of those tournaments would have been meaningful.

Wrong decision. This is a young squad and unless you see a loss as inevitable, I think they would learn a lot from the practice and the experience. Also, winning the inaugural Vegas Tournament would sound better than it is but recruiting is a world of sound bites as well as reality.

a) For selfish reason, I wish they kept playing.
b) Without considering the costs, I sure as hell hope the players were a major part of this decision with Olah and Demps getting two or three votes each. And has anyone known an athlete who wanted to end their season/career voluntarily? NEVER!
c) OTOH, Demps' family is a huge consideration. I would understand if they voted not to do it because he would be left behind.

As long as the players were involved in the decision, I have no problems.

No vote.

Had read elsewhere that the Vegas event is not a sure thing. Has anyone else heard anything? I think the right decision.

Wrong decision - keep playing - go for win # 21 - take the Kids to Vegas...Lose - so what... If NU wants us to watch non-conference games - they must matter - why not play another one

Olah deserved a chance to keep playing, if Tre was out - we need to learn to play w/out him any way

I can understand all of your thoughts but I voted "bad decision". I also hope it was a players decision and not a "money thing" by NU.

The Vegas 16 turned into the Vegas 8...a total disaster for them. All a bunch of no-name programs with no basketball history whatsoever. We are far better off skipping this weak-ass tourney.

Here they are, your inaugural Vegas 8. Yawn....

  • Game 1: Tennessee Tech (19-11) vs. Old Dominion (22-13) -- 12 p.m. PT
  • Game 2: Northern Illinois (21-12) vs. UCSB (18-13) -- 2:30 p.m. PT
  • Game 3: Oakland (21-11) vs. Towson (20-12) -- 6 p.m. PT
  • Game 4: Louisiana Tech (23-9) vs. ETSU (23-11) -- 8:30 p.m. PT

Reasons to play:
Post season experience for players and head coach
The players want to play (see below if you disagree)
Fans like watching the team play.
We could win it and have momentum into next season.

Reasons not to play
The players don't want to play
Cost benefit... Takes money to go. Little benefit to go.

Players are tired/injured JVZ and law are out.
How recovered is Olah's foot injury? Might not be worth the strain. Haven't Tap and Skelly been in boots too? How tired is Mac and Demps with their minutes load.

It goes along with #1 but the commentator at the big ten tourney said that Demps' wife was due I think today... He might decide to watch his kid being born instead of going to the Vegas 8... And nobody would blame him (for the NCAAs on the other hand...). That's just a specific reason why a player may not want to play.

Tre is young and he probably will have other children. So, what's the big deal about missing the birth of just one of them? And answer me this: how many times does a young person get to spend a few expenses-paid days in Vegas with his best friends, poolside, prime rib on the house, and on and on?

The choice is between: (1) lollygagging around the hospital, with the mother-in-law, as a bench player and no chance to "make a difference" other than by distributing cheap cigars ... versus .... (2) getting a shot at being postseason tournament MVP and bringing home the first-ever championship trophy from the Vegas(HalfOf)16 and later on embellishing the tourney stories for your son or daughter dozens of times over the years?

Just picture the welcoming crowds swarming to give you high fives at O'Hare and on campus.... the NBA scouts wanting a few minutes of your time. All of it! Not even a close call in my book.

(Settle down, you family-first people. The note is all in fun).

Best wishes to Tre and his bride, with my thanks for the fine season by Tre and his NU hoops buddies.

And we have a basketball history?
